Swim
Comments: I thought this swim went well until I got out of the water and looked at my watch. I sighted fairly well (or as well as I ever do) and kept going with no long stops ... and still my time sucked. I was hoping for something around 35:00, but went a couple of minutes over that. Oh well - it says something good that I was totally comfortable out there the entire time since that's not always been the case. What would you do differently?: Okay, how many race reports can I put this in?? I need to learn how to swim better. More pool time, a little coaching ... all the stuff I usually say. Transition 1
Comments: This was faster than I thought it was going to be, seeing as how I had to get my wetsuit off too. I took my time throughout it all, figured that since the swim had taken so long that there was no need to hurry. Overall, though, it was a good T1 -- socks and shoes went on very quickly, everything just kind of flowed. What would you do differently?: Nothing, I don't think. Bike
Comments: I did better on the bike than I thought I was going to do, so I was fairly pleased. Had some issues on the bike, though - my left arm and hand kept going painfully numb, leaving my hand all but useless for good chunks of the ride. Luckily the left gear shift is the big/small ring, so I didn't have to do much with that (couldn't actually shift with my left hand some of the time) and I was able to brake with my right hand when needed. This had happened to me once before, but it was an isolated incident so I didn't think much of it. Today, though, it happened probably close to 10 times over the course of the ride. What would you do differently?: Train more. I've spent a woefully small amount of time on the bike this summer and it showed. Transition 2
Comments: Good T2 for me. Again, didn't really hurry at all, but everything went very smoothly. What would you do differently?: Nada. Run
Comments: Not my best run ever, but I did what I wanted. Looking for under an hour, and did that by a little bit. What would you do differently?: With this being my first Oly distance, I wasn't sure what to expect by the time I got to the run, so I just kind of winged it. :) I might have been able to eke out another minute or so off my time but didn't want to push it too early and find that I had to crawl the last mile in. Post race
Warm down: Nothing too much. Stretched just an itty bit. Got a bag of ice to put on my achilles. Got my stuff out of transition and then we went and listened to the awards and raffle. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training, mostly. I just haven't been as good about getting out there this year as I was last year. But - in the end - my goal time was 3:20, so I beat that by quite a bit which makes me happy. Event comments: Nice, organized race. Wish the Expo had been better. But - the venue is great and it's a good-sized race -- not too big, not too small. Last updated: 2006-05-18 12:00 AM

Got up at 3:45, got things ready and checked out of the hotel. Drove to the parking area and it was far less crowded then I thought it was going to be, which was nice. Ate my bagel enroute. Bad thing - I forgot my Excedrin in the truck, so I didn't take any before the race. I could feel the headache kind of sitting in the back of my head, and by the time the day was over, it was coming on full force. Oh, back to pre-race routine... had a gel about 30 minutes beforehand and otherwise stood around talking to jschmidtchicago, cindyk and whizzzzz.
Swam a couple hundred meters to make sure all was good with the wetsuit. Water was MUCH warmer than air temp, so this was nice.
