Swim
Comments: Outstanding swim. Probably the best I ever felt in the water. Being a C race, I decided to try something a little different. Normally I take it easy on the swim and use it as a sort of warmup. Normally I start on the outside or back and just cruise. Today I lined up right up front and went out hard the first 200, then found a good rhythm and hung right on another guys hip for a while. Then encountered several slow swimmers from the first couple of waves and it threw me off a bit and lost my draft. Overall though it went very well, I might need to start pushing like this on the swim more often. At least in the beginning to get out of the traffic. Cut 32 seconds off my best time on this course. Swim time includes a pretty decent run before you cross the timing mat. I had my swim time on my watch in the 9:50 range. What would you do differently?: Nothing, went great. Not bad for only swimming once in 6 weeks. Transition 1
Comments: Transition went well. I was able to get the row right at the bike exit so not far to run in my shoes, but it was a long run from the water. What would you do differently?: Next race I am going to play with leaving the shoes on the bike. Was going to try it for this race but found out last night we have no rubber bands in the house. Bike
Comments: I had a really good bike. Again, for not riding as much lately I nearly equaled my best avg on this course (only 18secs slower). I felt really good and pushed pretty hard. I knew my run was not going to be great anyway so wanted to get the most time I could get. This race has gotten crazy competitive. Lots of elite local athletes now race this event. Evidence...had the 59th best bike time 2yrs ago and this year it is only good for 110th (but 212 more racers)! What would you do differently?: I am thinking about getting an aero helmet and/or more aero wheels for the Vermont race but I have a hard time justifying the cost right now. Transition 2
Comments: There were two entrances into the transition area and at first I ran down the wrong row. Luckily my rack was the first in, so I didn't lose much time when I had to run out of that entrance and into the 2nd one where my rack was. Other than that it went well. What would you do differently?: Remember which entrance to use. Run
Comments: I knew my run fitness was going to be my weakness and it was. I would have been very happy with anything near 9:00 pace and I just about nailed it so it is all good. Developed 2 bad blisters on my right foot between the big toe and one next to it. Got this same thing at my sprint in March. Only happens on sprints as my feet don't have enough time to dry off on the bike. Have learned my lesson now to tape them up before the race. Overall I was only 2.5min behind my best time on this course and that time loss was all from the run. So, I can tell now that every year I am getting a bit faster and if I had trained properly for this race I really think I could have beaten my best time. What would you do differently?: Get back into run shape. I should be and have done this course at an 8:00 pace so that is where I want to get back to. Post race
Warm down: Post race has gotten much better over the years. They had ice cold towels, ice pops to eat, water, pizza, beer, ice cream, etc. Got my toes looked at by the medic tent then ate/drank a little bit of everything. Afterwards, I went back in to the lake and cooled down until they let us back into transition to get our bikes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Back issues over the past month, led to very little training. But I've been getting treatment and no issues with it today. So all things considering it went well. Event comments: I love this race. This was my first ever tri 4 years ago and have done it 3 times now. It has gotten better every year. The roads are much better as some have been paved. The organization has just kept getting better. It's a well done event and lots of fun. It was also become super competitive with some big local names racing. The lake and run course couldn't be better and the temps this year were perfect in 75-80 range and party overcast with little wind. The post race keeps getting better too with pizza, beer, ice cream, ice towels, ice pops, etc. I will keep coming back. Last updated: 2012-05-02 12:00 AM

Up at 430a, out the door by 440, ate a powerbar on the way and at the site by 530. Plenty of time to set up. This is just a C race for me and just doing it to gauge where I am. I didn't expect too much being off with the back issue for several weeks and not working out again until 5 days ago. I knew my run fitness is not where it needs to be.
Did a little bit of swimming.
