  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

nice swim, barely wetsuit legal @78deg sun in face in mid portion, climb ladder at pier, stripped wetsuit on pier instead of sandy crowded transition area
What would you do differently?:

more drafting
Transition 1

Comments:

early sign up got close to bike exit from TA, stumps sand and pinecones and fireants in transition area, had ice in water/gatorade bottles had already melted, good decision to stipwetsuit on pier. extra water bottle rinsed off my feet before the socks went on.

Comments:

What would you do differently?:

balance the split

Comments:

good transition, felt hungry, took IBU and 2 tums , grabbed gels and chews
rack for 189 was furthest from the run transition
What would you do differently?:

put everything in a sandwich bag and distribute to pockets while jogging out of transition
Run
  • 2h 56m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

tough, first time running a half marathon distance, the heat was tough we had a mild winter for training good for bike and run, bad for acclimitization. My goal for a first time sub6hr vanished at mile 3, running any vanished @ mile 8, finishing called into question when legs locked up mile 12. Really thought that doubled hydration for what I normally take in on the bike with brick workouts would have helped. Cooling was the toughest part, hydration with ice water was the best I could stomach.
What would you do differently?:

marathon training in heat
Post race
Warm down:

couldn't remove my timing chip, numb in face, cramp in face, really cotton headed, wandered to water tent in shade and tried to cool down first, really thought about medic IV cool saline, could have used a 7 min icebath
drank three ice cold mtn dews, 3 waters,2 beers, ate chips and oranges

What limited your ability to perform faster:

acclimitation for running, cramps. Nothing left at end of race.

Event comments:

organized, ice not available near turn arounds when I was there on the run/walk

Wind: Headwind with gusts
Course: first 5-8 miles tar strips and sneaky potholes, I looked out for dropped water bottles. Back stretch on 220 smoother faster, more crosswind, nice road surface, <1% grades, turned R on 53 and the fan came on sustained SW probably 15mph, arms went numb at elbows, single 2 mile jaunt on Over Lyons was fun with no wind. TAR strip madness on 53 is correct. Rode the white line over 50% but nearly bit it on a pothole mile 50. Spin out last mile
