Pre-race routine:

did not change to much from my day to day eating... minimized my fiber intake the night before. Morning of had an apple sauce, bagel, 1 water and 1 bottle of perform.
Event warmup:

Idea was to get there early and grab a good spot in Transition. Got half way and realized I forgot my racebelt, seeing I only live 10 min away I went back and got it. Was able to get a rack spot where I wanted, bike exit/enter. Set up, continued sipping on water and went to get bib and chip. Came back out and decided to start the warmup. got on the bike and did my thing.. .came back and someone parked their bike right ontop of my clothers in transition and all spots close were taken. Tried to not let the bother me but it did. Coach told me to find a rack spot and then say something... bottom line this person was in the wrong. Their front tire was literally on my clothes. Had to run and warm up the legs and needed 20 minutes... only did 5... this was bugging me... my own fault. Came back and saw the girl... Approached her. She looked confused, said it was crowded... At this point there were quite a few people looking and I decided to let her have it. Threw in a "If you were a dude you'd be moving." Some guys let me squeeze in but I had to unclip my shoes and put them on in T1 instead of leaving them in pedals. By now I was over it but the lack of warmup would haunt me.
took a gel 10 min before start... should have done it 25-30 minutes before
Run

  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

I went too fast I think but not by a lot. maybe 5-10 sec a mile.
What would you do differently?:

run a bit slower knowing what is to come.
Transition 1
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

transition packed... shoes put on before getting on bike.. fumbled helmet a bit clipping
Bike
  • 59m 20s

Comments:

cramped up on bike... not enough warmup and maybe not enough fluid. Was cold in the am but warmed up nice right before race. Had my 1 bottle on the bike probably should have had a bottle of perform too. Wanted to average 230-240w but only could manage 215-220 before I started to cramp, so I had to adjust and overcome but knew I could still beat 1hr on the bike.
Used the rollers to my advantage and consciously stopped pedaling when I would get above 25mph... saw first hand me actually gaining on others going downhill while they pedaled.
What would you do differently?:

my decisions were good. Spent too much time in my big chain ring though. Cadence was good at 93rpm, but power avg was 207.. cramps played a role. Did not want to push it and have the seize up and knew I still had another 5k ahead of me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

great T2..
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 28m 21s
  • 3.13 miles

Comments:

cramped the first 3 minutes... had to stop and stretch, stopped at water fountaing to get some water... no aid station until mile 2 of second run... strange but dealt with it. Kept thinking to just run... either I will run out the cramps or fall over... thankfully I ran out of them and got to my pace...
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

walked... got some water, cookies, pbj on graham crackers were the bomb.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

first my mental state with the transition debacle then lack of warmup. All in all a good race though

Event comments:

bettered last years time by 45 minutes... take out about 10 for flat tires and still a good improvement physcially. 2011 2:38:53.. run times 30:33 and 34:52 with a bike of 1:29:53
