Pre-race routine:

I signed up to do this race with my brother, as its a local one to him and it was on our way to a family vacation in the Sierras. We drove up from Long Beach on Saturday morning. Race morning we got up and drove the hour out to the race site. It had been really hot the day before so I was expecting it, but I train by the ocean, so I was using this race as prep for IM Louisville next month. Got checked in, set up transition and hung out.
Event warmup:

Swam out a few yards and back.
Swim
  • 26m 43s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

This swim was also going to be practice for the no wetsuit swim in KY. I had only done 2 open water swims and 1 pool swim the last 6 months, so I wasn't expecting to be super fast....just wanted it to be a solid effort. The water was a perfect temp, and the course was pretty straight forward. Ended up coming out of the water side by side with my brother and felt really good.
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Guessing on my transition time here as they include T-1 in with the bike. I know I was pretty fast without a wetsuit to strip off.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 30s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.77 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike has been getting stronger and stronger despite doing 100% of my training on the trainer, so I was curious to see how I would do in the heat. Wasn't blazing hot, but it was definitely warm. I left transition with my brother, and got off to a good start. I had a bottle of gatorade between the aero bars, but not for long. The first speed bump leaving the park and it got launched. I had planned on buying a normal sport top bottle that morning, but they didn't have any, so I bought a bottle of water instead and filled that. What did me in was that it was one that had an indent to hold it, which means my cage didn't grip it very well. So yeah...with no aid stations on the bike, I rode this one dry. I felt fine on the ride....it's a pretty rolling course with some rough road for half, but all in all it was a solid ride. Again, I rolled into transition alongside my brother (this wouldn't last.)
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Had another fast transition.
Run
  • 53m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

I was definitely feeling the heat and lack of hydration when I started the run, but I did a good job of going out at an even pace. I knew nothing of the course other than it was on fire roads for the first half, then single track for the second. Almost all of it is rolling little hills, and the first half has no shade, so it took its toll quickly. I drank as much as I could at each aid station and dumped water on my head which helped. By the time I hit the single track, I was pretty much over it. I walked a little bit, but managed to keep moving forward. I was beat when I crossed the finish line.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing...hopped in the car to continue our journey up to the mountains.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could have done better if I trained in the heat, but thats just not that realistic. My age group is pretty damn fast. My brother and I are in the same group now, and he put 10 minutes on me on the run. His 2:21 was only good enough for 7th in our AG, but would have been good enough for 3rd in either younger or older AG's!

Event comments:

This is a great low-key race. The location is actually very nice, and the swim is fantastic.
