Swim
Comments: Very relaxed, wanted to take it very easy as this was my first attempt at this distance. What would you do differently?: Lube up under arms with body glide, had some serious chaffing issues! Transition 1
Comments: Used strippers at T1 entrance. What would you do differently?: Probably nothing. Bike
Comments: Performed way better in this area than expected. Didn't know how the hills would go being a Floridian. Was expecting something around 2:45-2:50. What would you do differently?: Take more nutrition on the bike, did not take as much as I had planned. Transition 2
Comments: Urinated in porta potty. Can't bring myself to pee on the bike! Run
Comments: This was the area I was somewhat disappointed in. I thought I could do around 1:45, especially with the cooler weather. I averaged around 8:10 for the first 7 miles, which was the plan. I was then going to pick it up a little but I had no juice left. Actually slowed to almost 10 minutes/mile for miles 11 and 12 and my hamstring seized at the 12 mile mark. Had to stop and work it out and was able to resume running after a few seconds. My HR actually went from about 153/lap at miles 5,6,7 to less than 145. Seems by cardio was stronger than my muscles?? What would you do differently?: Take more nutrition on the bike, skipped a few gus that I had planned. A few more longer runs and bricks in training. Was battling plantar fasciatis the past few months, so that was somewhat of a limiting factor in training. Bring the same model shoes and don't buy similar color looking shoes in the future! Post race
Warm down: Pizza and beer! What limited your ability to perform faster: The PF issue mentioned above, poor nutrition planning on the bike. Event comments: Way exceeded my expectations, the weather had a lot do with that. Heat and humidity take a toll on this clydesdale body! Last updated: 2012-05-11 12:00 AM

Coming from Ocala, FL arrived Friday night excited for my first HIM! Did the expo Sat and snuck in a quick 18 at Augusta National in the afternoon. Woke up at 5am raceday (quickly realized the round of golf the day before was just a dream :)!), slept surprisingly well. Left for race site about 5:30, arrived at transition about 6am. Got everything setup and noticed I had brought two different shoes (both were red/black Asics- but the left was a Cumulus and the right was a Gel Pulse). The positive was that they were a left and a right! Got back to the start about 6:30 and realized I still had two hours as I was in Wave 16 starting at 8:32. Hung out with the wife, nervously.
Walked from the host hotel to swim start, multiple times.
