Pre-race routine:

This race site is less than 20 minutes from my house. I still got up early because I wanted to make sure that my morning coffee was not going to be a race day issue.
We drove over to the park and I hit the ladies room, found Marilyn. Hung out waiting for Jen and her husband....Marilyn suggested we duct tape the shoes on so that the muddy obstacles wouldn't swallow the shoes off our feet.
Event warmup:

Huh? Walked a bit, stretched lightly and went off when my group was called. We seeded into the Mud Wallower wave (last one) because we hadn't done an obstacle course race before and didn't know how the format would work.

Comments:

We start off out of the park and along a fairly wide trail. Just before mile one we hit the first obstacle. It's the Wattle Wall of hay bales. Actually, it's a series of two sets of hay bales. The big, tall and round ones. I approached them like a high jump to get on top then roll off the other side. Run a few steps and repeat. Okay, that was fun.
There was a section of trail between the first two miles that went along the river and was more single track, I was stuck behind a couple people and couldn't get past them. Once out in the open, I picked my way past and found my way to the first crawl segment. There were a series of flags like the backstroke flags at a pool you had to crawl under. I used an inverted V hand and foot walk through them. Maybe 15 feet. Get up and run more.....
Obstacles 3, 4 and 5 were all fairly close to each other. I guess within 1/4-1/2 mile we had our first mud pit crawl. Followed rapidly by the first dip in the river to rinse off. Following that there were 3 or so rows of picnic tables to climb over. These were in groups of 2 spaced about 15 feet apart.
It seemed like a fairly long stretch of no obstacles before we hit the high stepper. It was a rope net of sorts to literally do high knee stepping through. I must thank my former personal trainer for giving me drills to get used to things like this.
We got to another set of flags to do that inverted V hand & foot walk through. The hills were fun cause they were soft dirt that kind of pushed away under each step. Hard to get a good foot hold in them. THe down hill part was short and intense, watch the footing....Some roots and stuff too.
Another dip in the river, this one was a little longer. Some people were swimming it, I walked through.
The second hill challenge offered ropes for those who needed assistance getting up. Heh, I just ran.
Back along the trail to the hay bales. Hit them the same way as the first time. The run ends by going through the historical park and there were people working in their costumes cheering us on.
Final mud pit was a blast, I just belly crawled through it.


What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I did this race for fun and it was definitely fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't do a lot of trail type running so it is a challenge to get used to. I have never done an obstacle course race and there are definitely challenges looking at each obstacle and sorting out mentally HOW I am going to approach it without losing much momentum. People were literally stopping before them and I would try to run around them and keep going.

Event comments:

The waves were sent out 2 minutes apart and it was a bit crowded.
