Pre-race routine:

It was a midday start which was a welcome change. Good family friendly time and we didn't have to get up way early to travel to the race. I'm not a morning person either so I love the midday start.
Event warmup:

200m swim
Swim
  • 31m 8s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

Really struggled with the start getting through the shore break and seemed to be going no where initially. The swell was a factor all through the swim even though it didn't look that rough from the shore. Wasn't able to catch a wave back into the beach either and we had to fight the under toe to get back to shore as well. The swim seemed really long and everyone I spoke to said the same thing. That being said, I was pretty disappointed with my time and performance and it was probably the worst swim of the season however I at least got out still feeling reasonably fresh.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting in and out through the shore break a lot more during my warm-up. Need to push harder at the start to position myself better for the rest of the swim. Mid pack out of the water is not good enough for my swimming standard.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Not too bad, took a little while to get my bike off the rack as they were pretty low compared to my seat height. That slowed me up a little so I didn't knock other competitors bikes off the rack either.

Comments:

Still struggling with enough strength on the bike to really push with the top guys in my age group. I'm weak on the hills and this really slowed me up. The road was very rough and potholed in patches which made it tough to take advantage of the downhill sections. I finished the ride stronger than I started it so I'm confident that my endurance is getting to where it needs to be but I just need to gain more strength in the off-season. I also dropped my chain at one point coming back into town prior to T2 but it only cost me about 30 seconds. The bike leg was shortened slightly from 40km to 36km due to local government restrictions unfortunately but it was still a fun, challenging course with just the road surface being the only negative.
What would you do differently?:

More longer rides with longer intervals. Plenty of hills required in my longer rides as well as dedicated hill repeats and big gear work.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

No issues other than the same problem with the height of the bike racks again which cost me a few seconds. Got the shoes on quickly and felt comfortable pretty much straight away.
Run
  • 43m 21s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 20s  min/km
Comments:

I felt comfortable on the run straight away and just tried to keep the turnover high and made sure I kept the pace up and enjoyed the run. Took the first two laps out hard but started to struggle a bit on the third lap. Gave it all I had on the last lap and finished feeling strong with a smile on my face. Absolutely stoked with the time as it is my first time under 45mins for a triathlon 10km which is awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - it was a PB
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim was tough and long for everyone, it is still the bike that is holding me back a bit. Need more long rides and strength work on the bike for next season.

Event comments:

Fantastic race that is really well run and organised and has a fabulous atmosphere thoughout. Registration was quick and seamless and the after-party is renowned for good reason. I love the Saturday midday start as it allows you to travel to Byron Bay on the day of the race without having to worry about accomodation and it makes it very family friendly as well. Loved it.
