Swim
Comments: Walking out onto the dock I stepped on something, not a rock, pickup up my foot and popped a big treble hook off of it, I stepped on the rounded part and it was under my arch so I didn't put much pressure on it, no skin pierced, a nice volunteer offered to hold it and properly dispose of the hook, that could have turned out much worse. Since this was a relay I expected to be under 8:00, perhaps as fast as 7:30. My navigation absolutely sucked and I apologize to everyone in my wave that I swam over and into, many of them more than once. I am now very comfortable breathing on each side and effectively switching between sides, I tried to navigate mostly by watching bouys and swimmers on each side but ended up inside the bouy line a couple times and outside everyone else several times as well. Anytime I was pointed in the right direction I was swimming away from the pack but would then veer off one side or the other and then see the pack moving on past, make a correction and zig back in front of them. Reckon if the water had been clear and there was a big black line on the bottom of the lake I might have even beat my 7:30 goal. Pretty fun to pick up the pace the last 50 or 100m and gain a few seconds when I'd normally be working to stay steady for the bike transition. I think the Garmin map accurately descibed my route, complete with all the loops. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/177916123 What would you do differently?: swim straight and sight forward a few more times Transition 1
Comments: pretty good handoff of the chip to Mark What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: Me and Pete went out and watched Mark circulate, 3 consistent laps under 10 minutes, Pete went out and ran a bit during the 3rd lap then headed over to transition. Transition 2
Comments: pretty quick T2, I was surprised that our transitions were as quick or quicker than the open tri, the team box was in the far corner, and there was always a little fumbling with the chip. Run
Comments: Mark and I ran out along the run course to cheer Pete along in a couple spots then looped back around the lake for the finish. Post race
Warm down: nothing, don't even think I broke a sweat in the swim What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim navigation, otherwise we solidly beat my expectations, each leg was better than expected. Event comments: A nice, well run race and had perfect weather this year, a great change from the last couple of years. Last updated: 2012-05-13 12:00 AM

Not much since I was only swimming the relay leg. We spawned the relay idea a few months ago during the BrikTense triathlon class, I mainly wanted an open water swim/race before the KC Tri, Brent was up for the bike, and Peter is always willing to race. Brent had to bail due to other commitments so Pete recruited Mark for the bike leg. I figured we were looking at par times of 8 min for the swim, 30 min for the bike, and 19 min for the run, that left 3 minutes for transitions in order to break 1 hour.
Ran a half mile or so in the neighborhood before breakfast to try and trick my body into getting on with business, moderate success. Swam 2 or 3 short out and backs.
