Total Time = 1h 22m 47s
Overall Rank = 13/53
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Arrived within 15 minutes to register due to subway being late.
Event warmup:

Ran about 1/2 mile.
Run
  • 20m 31s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

First time this year that my seasonal allergies kicked in. It sounded like I was going to die on this run but I kept a good pace.
Transition 1
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

I was very deliberate in this transition even though I was not hustling. This allowed my breathing to get somewhat under control. The faster transition times (and those people had shoes clipped on already) was only 15 seconds faster.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike
  • 40m 4s
  • 13.4 miles
  • 20.07 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where the work needs to be done. I rode hard but did not attack the one hill that strong. Most of the faster riders took the hill in their high gear but I shifted to the lower gear and used a higher cadence.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

I was unsure where the dismount line was so I decided not to take shoes off while riding. Also, I was being whimpy and did not want my socks to get wet. Overall, it only cost me about 10 seconds. I got bike racked, shoes off and running shoes on rather quickly.
Run
  • 20m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

When I got out on the run a runner blew past me right away and knew I would not be able to catch him (he ran the fastest 5k split). I passed the 3rd place girl within 1 mile but she was on my shoulder the entire time. Unfortunately, I did not have anyone to chase and therefore I did not push the last mile and permitted the 3rd place female to pass me within last 1/2 mile.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the last mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water, did some stretching and had a bagel. Also, waited for awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Did not mentally push myself to limit since first race of season.

Event comments:

The race director ran 3 different duathlons at the same time which made things a little confusing. They should just run 1 or at best 2 distances. The race directors are very nice and try to make sure everyone has a good time. It was a picture perfect weather day and had a great time.
