Pre-race routine:

Usual stuff. Got there at 5:30 and had plenty of time to set up.
Event warmup:

The announced that the water temp was 74 and I got out the wetsuit. Pleasantly surprised given that just 4 days earlier it was 83. Swam a bit in the wetsuit.
Swim
  • 06m 7s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt great for the first 200m but died a bit on the last 200. Minimal bunching problems as this was a one-way swim in a 50m pool. Happy with this result as its 40 or so seconds better than my past (wetsuit-less) swims at this race.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe hold back a bit in the first 200m.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Good transition given that I had to get the batsuit off. The transition area is very long so probably half of this time was spent running to my rack from the pool.
Bike
  • 33m 5s
  • 11.6 miles
  • 21.04 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike went very well. As planned, I did the whole thing in the large chain ring (to avoid dropping my chain), but I held back just a bit on the biggest hill to save something for the run.

What would you do differently?:

I always wonder how much better I could do with a decent bike...mine is a piece of crap.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

I started to run and realized I didn't grab my garmin off my bike. That cost me probably 10 seconds as I had to yank it twice to get it off and then I fidgeted with it to pop it onto my quick-release wrist strap as I ran. I was glad to have it along with me for the run though.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to grab the garmin before I put the bike onto the rack.
Run
  • 22m 8s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good coming off the bike and, as planned, slammed it into high gear in the first downhill mile. I wasn't going quite the pace I had hoped, but the hillier sections later on felt not that bad. The hill sprints I've been doing for the last couple of weeks really seemed to pay off here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Pushed it as hard as I could. 90 seconds faster on this course than I was the last time I did this race. Can't complain.
Post race
Event comments:

When I saw my overall time I pleased that I had shaved off 2 minutes from my previous best tima at this race. However, I was 4/52 in my age group, so I was convinced I didn't place (they only give awards for the top 2 in AG). But, I just now found out that I was first in my AG because three other guys placed up in masters and clydes. Woo-hoo!

I wish they would do the award ceremony earlier. Having one-way traffic for the swim really stretches out the overall length of the event. I guess I'd rather have a less-congested one-way swim than an earlier award ceremony...
