Pre-race routine:

Checked in to our hotel room at about 11 :30 went to bed not soon after. Unfortunately for us it was "senior week" in ocean city so we we're woke up at about 3am to screaming yelling and partying...good times..woke up at 5 ate a donut (extremely healthy choice) and headed to Assateague...got there in plenty of time (for once) and set up transition area
Event warmup:

Ocean swim...so zipped up wet suit and jumped in Ocean..swam around..rode some waves!
Swim
  • 18m 38s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was ok. Ocean was extremely glassy..perfect longboarding waves rolled in (wish I brought my board!!!) Was real bunched up in the start which slowed my time down.
What would you do differently?:

Start like a bat out of hell at the start instead of starting in the middle and having to fight through the pack!
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

Slow transition time but I kind of like to take in slow in T1. I know I'm not going to place so I like to dry my feet off and put socks on for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Bike
  • 43m 50s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 18.75 mile/hr
Comments:

So biking is definitely my weakest sport. That being said I was very happy with my bike time. The course was extremely flat and I tried to stay at a high speed (for me) the whole time. Got passed but only by Triathlon bikes and people with aeros but did my fair share of passing for once!!!
What would you do differently?:

Need some time in the saddle for sure. Hardly spent any time training on the bike. Also would like to get a set of aero bars!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Legs felt a bit mushy jumping off the bike. Over-all it went fairly well though!
Run
  • 25m 27s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

So run felt great! Even after giving it my all on the bike..besides a little bit of cramping in my right calf I felt good. Started running at what I thought was a comfortable pace and looked down at my Garmin and was running a 7:30 minute mile...Best part was running through the campgrounds a lot of the campers were cheering us on..including a couple little kids...and then there was the wild horse that literally ran next to me like he was part of the race (for those of you that aren't familiar with Assateague Island it is home to a ton of wild horses) this was a really neat experience!!
What would you do differently?:

Try and go a bit faster...would like to run stead 7:30's...
Post race
Warm down:

Got a cold bottle of water and ate some chocolate chip cookies and granola bar. Went back to the finish line to cheer on other competitors and my friends that I came with.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more training especially on the bike. Aero bars.. maybe more sleep..

Event comments:

Loved the race. Ocean swim was so glassy unlike last year (from what I saw I did not race it last year) only thing that would of been better is maybe an after race party...and finisher medals for everyone :) was a bit cheap on the race swag (shirt, no medal, no other goodies) but couldn't of asked for better weather and people! Will def do next year
