Swim
Comments: Eventually we got the 6th wave and in my pink swim cap I entered the water. As the horn blared the insanity started, I got hit, kicked, head butted and threw a few elbows of my own to get some room. Overshot the 1st buoy by a good amount but this was great, I had space and just hammered away to the second turn, rounded the buoy and then body-surfed in. Transition 1
Comments: I had a lousy spot in transition, just past the swim-in arch, meaning I had a long run-out with the bike, but I made a speedy change and then as I got my feet strapped in, yup We’ve just got to fly ! goes screaming through my head. And off to the races with the tailwind at the start of the bike leg. Bike
Comments: Passed someone in my age-group right off and then worked my way through the groups in front of me until…. I almost crashed out on a 90 degree left handed corner. My rear wheel locked up and started sliding, I got off the brakes but wasn’t slow enough to the corner so…I rode right across a lawn (Sorry !!), through the boulder barrier and back onto the road. Big thanks to the guy I passed just before the corner for letting me back in on his right. Rest of the bike I was pretty careful which cost me some time, but I turned in a much better ride than the week before in Plymouth. Was it because I’m another week recovered from the Half-Rev in Maine or that We’ve just got to fly ! was stuck in my head ? Must be the song right ? Transition 2
Comments: Nailed my dismount again ! (Yay !) Quick change into my running kicks and off for a 3.5 mile (strange distance) run. Run
Comments: Finally had a good run ! Averaged 7:02’s and didn’t see anyone from my age group for the whole run. Had a blast on the final downhill section leading to the beach and crossed the line in 1:04:17, 4th my age-group and 30th overall. Post race
Event comments: Now a little rant.. I hate, hate when the age-group is split into more than one swim wave ! My group was split into 35-37 and 38-39. When I finished I had no idea how I did because of this. Three guys in the 38-39 wave placed ahead of me, 2 of them I was pretty close to. If we had entered the water together it would have been a really competitive, fun race. Anyways, Lance and Tony do a great job with the New England Tri Tour races. Although I’m planning to go long (Beach 2 Battleship Full-Iron) next year, I’ll carve out a spot for some of these local races. Last updated: 2012-05-15 12:00 AM

You know how sometimes a song gets stuck in your head for a race ? That was this race for me. Driving to the race venue after my usual cereal, banana & coffee breakfast I was listened to some hair-metal on Pandora when Def Leppard’s “Rocket” came on. I just knew this song We’ve just got to fly ! would end up stuck in my head for the whole race.
Anyways got down to Craigville Beach and just checked in, transition setup. I immediately noticed the surf was up (Sweet !) due to Hurricane Leslie churning away over the Atlantic. Made my around to say hi to some folks and eventually went for a warm-up spin with Greg. After that we threw on ur wetsuits, met up with Alice and decided to check out the waves before the race start. Freakin’ awesome ! Big waves, good currents, the boats were rocking, this swim was going to be fun. Quickly realized that sighting would be an issue if you weren’t at the crest of a wave.
