Swim
Comments: As the horn blared I took off and thought wow ! We are going out fast, the 1st 2 tenths of a mile flew by and then things got interesting. Rounded the final large buoy and headed for the 2 white Red Bull buoys at the swim in arch. Shortly after this the group I was swimming with got just about run into by kayak telling us we had to go around these little buoys to our right, guess I shouldn’t have skipped that per-race meeting. So a quick turn to the right, around a couple people, swim over the people trying to cut the course and finally up over the rocks and headed into T1 What would you do differently?: Go to pre-race meeting Transition 1
Comments: Helmet on, wetsuit off, grab the bike, head to bike out, jump on and as my feet go in the shoes, get yelled at by the transition coordinator. I need to go forward another 5 feet before mounting the bike. Off the bike, run forward jump on and hammer away ! What would you do differently?: Run to mount line (got to pre-race meeting ;) ) Bike
Comments: This bike course is awesome, some rolling hills to start with, then a long flattish section and around mile 12 a fairly steep section with 2 hills separated by a brief plateau. Great fun hammering away on this course: Transition 2
Run
Comments: T2 went great and I felt pretty good heading out on the run. Shortly into the run i passed someone in my age-group and I remembered something my friend Brian noted in one of his race reports, never look back ! I kept the pace quick and as I got near the turn-around i saw Jeff wasn’t very far in front of me so I decided I would catch him. I worked really hard, saw the HR climbing and the pace on my watch dropping, good stuff. Within the last quarter mile I caught and passed him, but I used up everything I had to do it, so when the final sprint came I couldn’t hold him off. Still I’m extremely pleased with my run leg, definitely my best run in a triathlon this season and the final mile was the fastest mile I’ve run since the Falmouth 5000 5K back in March. I just haven’t done a lot of speed work this season with my focus being primarily on the 2 half-ironman races. Post race
Event comments: It’s been a fun season and I need to send out thanks to everyone on the Bay State Triathlon Team, my friends Gary, Ian, Kirstin, Brian, Jess, Mike and Jameson for all the support and advice. Most importantly I have to thank my family for putting up with all the long bike rides, runs and “triathlon talk”. I couldn’t do this without their support. Next up some fall road races and a little dabbling at cyclocross. Last updated: 2012-05-15 12:00 AM

A little bit later wake up call than the past 3 weekends due to the 9 o’clock start time. After my usual breakfast I grabbed my stuff and headed for the race venue. After a nice sunrise ride to Dartmouth I reached for my phone and wallet and said “Where’s my wetsuit bag ?” SHIT ! I left in in the kitchen at home ! So after checking in I asked the Race Director if anyone was doing on-site rentals, nope but the vendor had a deal on Blueseventy suits. Checked them out, still like $300, no dice. Water temp 68, I can do this for 10 min right ? But then my teammate Jeff came through with his old wetsuit, yay !
So after getting in a warm-up jog and spin with Greg, I squeezed myself into the Orca wetsuit and headed to the swim start for a warm-up with Greg and Jeff. We decided to skip the athlete’s meeting in transition and stay at the swim start. Eventually everyone else showed up and it was time to race. This race was serving as some sort of East Coast Collegiate championship so the first wave was a huge co-ed wave of collegiate athletes. After they took off I was in the water and swimming out to the start buoys for this point-to-point swim.
