Pre-race routine:

Got up pretty early (3:30AM)... went to the Library to deposit some over-do items and read some inspirational running articles while there. Had some coffee and a Gatorade and then red bull.

Ted picked up Lilia and I at 5 and we headed out to the start at the Aurora Sports complex... Stopped at 7-11 because I forgot my two bottles of Gatorade. Bought a Chocolate Eclair and inhaled it... I thought that concentrated calories would help fuel me...

Got to the parking lot at the staging area with about 10 minutes to go. Lilia found a bush to do some business in and Ted and I found a locked bathroom building to use...

I was stressed because my bib was a "half-marathon" bib and not a marathon bib... this bothered me as at each check point I was mistaken not as a marathoner but a half-marathoner... bummer.
Event warmup:

No real warm-up (when do I ever warm up?). I found a race directer to tell them about my number and bib error... He said it would be corrected at the finish... still it bothered me a lot.

Got in line behind the speedy relay teams and before I could set my watch, the gun went off.

Comments:

I wanted to go out easy and I did... there were a few guys who I race regularly at the start and I did want to beat them. They went out very fast and I held back... At mile 2 I developed a side stitch (the chocolate eclair) and it lasted until mile 12. This was a blessing in disguise as it kept me from going out too fast. By mile 12 I caught Jay (A local running rag's Runner of the month) and by 16 I caught David (Jay's partner in crime). I was pleased with myself because I conserved energy and at mile 20 I was slightly ahead of my goal pace (3:00s). By 22 I started to fade a little and then as the temps climed and the hills got steeper I sort of blew up. I hung on to finish respectibly but I did not surge or try to catch anyone. At this point I was just wanting to get across the finish line.

What would you do differently?:

As usual I carry a full bottle of Gatorade with me on my long runs and races. I intended to consume the full bottle by mile 10. My side stitch kept me from drinking as much as I should have... I finished the marathon with Gatorade still in the bottle and I did not stop at any water/gatorade stations... with the 90 degree heat, this was a huge mistake. Also, I forgot my Goos in Ted's car and didn't have any on the course... this also probably messed me up.
Post race
Warm down:

I had to go to the control booth to fix my number/bib problem... then I got a bottle of water and went to the spectator area at the finish line to cheer on Lilia and Ted.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

TRAINING!
INJURY!
ILLNESS!
STRESS!
Although I had 7 20 mile runs over the training cycle, I have been nursing an injury to my foot limiting both my frequency of runs and my over-all milage. Also I was not able to do any speedwork.

I guess I need to get my personal life fixed if I want to train at a high level. This guy needs work.

Event comments:

I'm happy with my over-all run. It could have been much worse. I think that the course was very difficult. It makes Boston look easy... It is probably the second hardest marathon course that I have run.

I did not enjoy it and unless signifcant changes are made to the course I will not run it again even though it is in my home town. Boo.

AVG HR was 156... Not bad but sort of high for the pace that I ran. I had a difficult time getting myself dialed in.
Course: The start was way out in the nowhere lands of Aurora at a place called the Aurora Sports Complex... I have never been there and I will probably never go back there... Colfax is a super long street... From there it is a straight shot down Cofax with a brief detour at Fitsimons Medical Center and then a couple of miles through City Park then back to Colfax, through Downtown, Past Mile High Stadium and then out to Lakewood and then finishing with a 600 foot climb into a frickin' strip mall (Colorado Mills). Over all the course sucked eggs. Very little crowd support, very sun exposed on a hot day and set up to humiliate runners...
