Swim
Comments: Started with breathing every 3, but couldn't keep it up. Went to every 2, switching sides up and back. I was happy with my breathing for the most part. I think I was lifting my head a bit too much, but overall happy with swim--stayed with freestyle and it is my best time to date. What would you do differently?: I did a good job with all I wanted to. I visualized a bit before getting in; wanted to keep it smooth and easy, not worry about anyone else, and stay freestyle. I just need to keep working in general. Transition 1
Comments: Bit slow in T1. Had to walk on the pool deck to catch my breath.Started to run when I got outside. Forgot to set my watch up correctly. A bit foggy--took me a sec to figure out what to do first. Got running with bike to mount line and had to stop to put on gloves. What would you do differently?: Have watch set up. Otherwise I think it was just the day. And I was so happy with my swim, everything else was gravy. Bike
Comments: Raining hard--apparently this was the wettest May 21st on record. Great. Heart rate was really high to start bike, but settled down a bit. Thought I went out pretty hard on the first lap, but looking at times, they were all about the same. Watching some faster bikers pass and realized that I was in too hard a gear downhills, so made that change. The rain was coming down so hard, especially on the downhill stretches. Had to squint to avoid raindrops in the eyes...No concerns with wet roads, felt comfortable. I think transition times are included in bike as I had my time at just over 41 minutes. What would you do differently?: Nothing much Transition 2
Comments: No worries here. Had a bit of trouble with tying my shoes, but that had to do with the soaking wet weather. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I feel really good about my run. I was able to keep my pace even on the hills. I wasn't sure I was going to have a great run, but just let my legs do what they want. They wanted to go fast! I felt good for the whole run. About 3km in, I caught up with a young guy who I had heard say it was his first tri. We chatted a bit, then he stopped at a water station. On the last downhill I could hear him right behind me. About 30m from the finish, he says from behind me "sprint to the finish?" so I said sure and took off. And he blasted past me :-). The announcer saw this happening and was calling it out. I crossed the finish line with a huge smile on my face. This is what I love about triathlon. What would you do differently?: Nothing at all. I am getting faster ;-). I don't have any stand alone 5km races to compare to, but this is my fastest in a tri. Post race
Warm down: Some stretching, walking around What limited your ability to perform faster: Wind and still learning. Event comments: Very little post race food. Course well marked, lots of enthusiastic volunteers. Didn't like the way they started the swim, everyone just in a huge line. Liked UBC better, where they gave you a wave start time.
