Age Group Rank = 5/15
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 0400. Had my usual instant oatmeal, Clif bar, and coffee while driving 75 miles to race site. Arrived at 0515. Had to walk about .75 mile to transition area.
Event warmup:

Not much at all, just relaxed. I guess I should have stretched some.
Swim
  • 11m 56s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical slow swim for me. Had to back stroke some to rest a little bit.
What would you do differently?:

More swim practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Putting socks on wet feet worked out well. Did not put on a jersey shirt.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Did a good job.
Bike
  • 30m 39s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Great ride! Pushed hard and steady and felt very comfortable.

Had a close call near the beginning. At about the 2 mile mark, I see a shadow coming up on my right. What the ??, someone passing on my right! I ease over to the left, and the shadow gets closer, so I move again to the left, and from my LEFT side, I hear, "Whoa, watch it." We bump bodies at 20mph and lightly push off from each other as he continues his pass. He had not said anything on his approach and the way his shadow was cast, it made it seem like he was coming up on the right. Nobody crashed and everything was cool. Wow, that was close!

In the straight sections I averaged 22-23, with a max of 24.7. The corners and traffic brought my average down.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, maybe focus on efficiency, pedal stroke, and faster cornering.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Good T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 21m 37s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Good fast run, passed a lot of folks.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank some water, ate some fruit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall ability and swimming skill. This was my second triathlon, so there are still a lot of little things to work on.

Event comments:

A very good race, especially for a first-time event. Lots and lots of food and drinks with very good variety. The only downside was lack of portacans. There were only 5 for the whole event. The line before the race was ENORMOUS. I knew this would be a problem and was glad I took care of business early before the race.
