![]() Swim
Comments: First open water swim ever. Kind of freaked out in the beginning about being kicked and running in to people. Also freaked out about going off course. I didn't want to swim any further than I had to. Because I was so worried about getting kicked, I started on the outside. This kind of messed me up because I felt like I was so far away from the buoys and every time I looked up to see where I was (which was like every other stroke) I would start to head straight to the buoys and then run in to people. Once I rounded the last buoy and was heading for the end I finally started swimming like I knew I could. I still kept looking up to make sure I was going straight. What would you do differently?: Practice swimming in open water to practice sighting! Don't freak out about starting on the outside to avoid being hit. I think that paid off in the end. According to Nick he got kicked in the face and swallowed a bunch of water and he never really recovered. Glad that didn't happen to me! ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Pulled off cap and goggles right away. Grabbed a glass of Gatorade but only drank a sip (I didn't want to walk and I can't drink and run). Found my spot and sat down. Grabbed a towel and wiped off my feet. Put on my socks and shoes. Put on my helmet, grabbed my bike, and was off. What would you do differently?: I think I may try to ride and run without socks in my next sprint...of course I'll have train like that first. I think with practice, I'll get a lot faster. ![]() Bike
Comments: The bike was fun. I went a lot faster than I expected. I was hoping to average 16 mph, but averaged 17.4. I guess the wind in the park I ride in slows me down more than I thought. I passed a lot of girls and was only passed by 1. It was a bit congested in the beginning, but thinned out towards the end (on my first lap all the men were on their second lap, by my second lap it was mostly girls out there). I really thought a couple of times that I was pushing to hard. My heart rate felt a bit high, but I was having a good time pushing myself. What would you do differently?: Not be afraid to pass people! Train more at a faster pace. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Racked bike and sat down to pull off bike shoes. Put on running shoes and made sure laces were good to go (first time with quick lace thingys). Took off helmet, grabbed race belt, and headed for run start. Put on race belt and grabbed water (once again I didn't drink much because I didn't want to walk). What would you do differently?: ??? More practice and I'll get faster! ![]() Run
Comments: No mile markers which kind of threw me off. I got to the first water stop and I didn't know how far I had to go. My watch said 10:00 so I figured if this was mile1 I was screwed! I have such a hard time gauging my pace after riding so I really had no clue if I was going fast or slow. I overheard some guy tell someone that we were almost halfway, so that made me feel better. At the next water stop they said 1 mile left, and then when I rounded the last corner and I hear 3 quarters of a mile left it finally hit me that I was doing really well (well for me that is!) I realized I could break 25 minutes- I've never done that in a regular 5K! What would you do differently?: Stop and walk to take a drink in transition before starting the run to bring my HR down a bit. The first mile was a bit rough. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Found Nick and walked over to the food area. Wasn't hungry at all, but grabbed a bottle of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim. Not training enough on the bike. Event comments: Only my 2nd tri, but seemed to be well organized. Only two things that bothered me- not enough porta potties and no mile markers on the run. Lots of post race food and drink- pizza, fruit, other stuff. Posted results quickly. I'll be back next year and hopefully I'll do better on the swim! Last updated: 2006-05-22 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:30. Drank Ensure, got ready, checked my bag, and got in the truck. Nice to have a husband that gets our bikes ready! Got to the race site and stood in line to be marked. Went and found my spot on the rack and set up. Had to explain to a couple of people where to put their bikes- this is only my 2nd tri and here I am giving advice! :) Got my chip, my swim cap, and stood in line for the bathroom. I was about 5 people away from getting to go when I heard them announce that transition would be closing in 5 minutes and I didn't have my goggles. Had Nick run back and grab his stuff and then I ran back and grabbed my stuff. Got back to the line in time to walk right in to the porta potty- perfect timing. Studied the transition area while standing in line to see bike in and out and where the run started. Headed over to water to find my age group. We were the last group to start. Was kind of worried I'd be the last out of the water or last overall!
Stood in line talking to other girls in my age group. I met another girl that was pretty nervous about the swim. I knew I could do the distance no problem it was the fact that this was my first OW swim that scared me! I wasn't nervous about being in open water. I was nervous about staying on course!
