Pre-race routine:

First triathlon ever so I tried to get to the plantation as soon as I could so I had time to scout out my transition and whatnot. Woke up at 3:45, threw on some sweats and choked down two bars with swigs of gatorade and water before heading out the door at 4. My dad was excited to see how it all worked so he volunteered to do the driving, so I went right back to sleep and woke up when we arrived. Had a gel as we walked in and watched other people set up their transitions and tried to imitate them as best I could. One friendly gentleman helped me out with where all of the race numbers go which was very helpful!
Event warmup:

None. Figured I'd be pretty wiped by the end of the day anyway. Had another gel and swung my arms around as the two heats before me went off and made my way down to the water.

Comments:

This was pretty much what I knew was going to go well. Took the first part of the race out really strong and once I put a bit of distance behind me and the rest of my wave I stopped kicking and pulled myself through most of the middle section. This was my second OWS experience, and man my navigation is really terrible! I shot out wide right and no matter how many corrections I made on the way out I was still moving farther and farther right. By the time I got around the bouy I was passing people from earlier waves and let them be my guides on the way back. Still excited I hit #1 overall with plenty of room for improvement just from navigation issues.
What would you do differently?:

I think the narrowness of the course hurt me a bit here because I kept thinking the boys going out were the ones marking the way back, but really i just need to practice sighting more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s
Comments:

Felt woozy going from swimming to running, but once I got my bearings I had a good strong run up into the transition area. Threw on my helmet and running shoes. And decided to just put on my race belt now so I wouldnt have to deal with it later. The transition exit wasnt where I thought it was so I felt a little stupid making a big lap around the transition area to the bike out. Wasnt comfortable jumping onto my bike with wobbly legs so I casually got on my bike and set off.
What would you do differently?:

The bike out was well hidden, but I could have scouted better

Comments:

Woof. I didnt really know how this was going to go coming into it, but I sure recognized that a ton of people were passing me and I sure wasnt passing anybody! People with road and tri bikes were going by me like I wasn't even moving, but I didn't worry about it too much and just tried to keep my feet turning over. Quads were on fire by about the middle of the ride but I dont really think I slowed down much. The hills, though not too steep or long, really kicked my butt. I was having trouble coming out of the saddle to tackle the tougher ones and really slowed down a lot on the uphills so much that I coasted most of the downhills just to recover. Some of the guys passing me made joking remarks about my mountain bike which was kind of funny. I was very relieved to see the bike finish
What would you do differently?:

Need more time in the saddle so my legs are stronger and my back doesnt tighten up so badly. Also a road bike or tri bike would probably help :P
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Felt wobbly again coming off the bike and struggled for a bit to find my rack, but already had my belt and shoes on so all I had to do was drop the helmet and I was off!
What would you do differently?:

Once again, find the bike transition so I know how getting to my rack will work.

Comments:

My legs werent as shot as I expected them to be actually, but I still didnt move quite as fast as I wanted to. Was conscious of the fact that I should have had something to drink on the bike but hate drinking and running. Still, I gave in at the mile mark and tried to sip something. Instantly cramped. Crap. I need to train more while taking in calories and liquids so that doesnt happen. Saw a kid who looked to be about my age coming at the 2 mile mark so tried to pick it up a little bit and had more left than I thought I would. Finished strong. Didnt really like the trails but it at least stayed cool in the woods.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks/run training, train while taking in fluids especially so I dont suffer so badly at the Oly distance in August.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank Water/Heed, ate bananas. Looked around at some of the booths before heading home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Man the bike is a huge weakspot. Also I could have pushed the run harder and been more competitive, disappointed that I didnt really push harder the last 3.1

Event comments:

Had a great time! Volunteers/Police were great especially on the bike.
