Total Time = 1h 10m 16s
Overall Rank = 124/461
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 23/44
Pre-race routine:

Snack bar 2.5 hours before, gel about 30 mins before.
Event warmup:

Couple of strokes in the water, mostly to adjust to the cold.
Swim
  • 08m 59s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water swim. Felt out of breath after about 3 strokes. Current/waves kept pushing me towards shore. No matter how far I aimed to the right, I kept ending up 90 degrees towards the course. Slowed/stopped several times to catch my breath and get my bearings.
What would you do differently?:

Need more open water practice. I thought I'd be fine through the first half and then tire a bit, but I never really got going. Slightly disappointed, but still feel pretty good about it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Wetsuit and timing chip got tangled. Being tired and a little disoriented from the swim didn't make things easy.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I just need more practice, but the wetsuit is a huge pain even when I can sit down or lean against something.
Bike
  • 34m 47s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed as hard as I could without overdoing it. Felt good, though I think I slowed a bit over the last lap. Traffic actually wasn't bad, given the number of riders on course. Aero would've been a big help.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Still need to work on my bike conditioning, but that'll come with time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Had to squeeze my bike in between others on the rack - didn't really have enough room. Slight difficulty getting my running shoes on.
Run
  • 22m 12s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt a bit tired to start, then good for the second half. Probably could've pushed harder. Got tripped up at the water table near mile 2 - runners heading out decided to go around the wrong side of the table, but I only lost a couple of seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much. Maybe get a watch so I know what pace I'm running and can plan a bit better.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking around to keep the muscles moving. Then pancakes!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of open-water practice and I've been fighting a bit of a cough all week.

Event comments:

One of the best-organized races I've ever done (only my second multi-sport, but I've done lots of running races). Everybody involved did a great job and seemed to be having lots of fun.

Course: 3/4 mile on pavement, then up a flight of stairs to the boardwalk, off the end of the boardwalk onto pavement, then u turn, back up the ramp to the boardwalk and finish on the boardwalk. Boardwalk was the usual uneven, bouncy wooden surface - always keeps it a bit interesting. Don't think I've ever done a run course with stairs in the middle, but there was construction along the path that forced a re-route.
