Swim
Comments: Yes, the swim was short. Darn, I like that pace calculation! The men started 5 minutes before the women/teams, so I wished my tri-brother a good race and watched him swim off. He was worried about the swim, so I was worried about him, but I had more faith in his swim today than he did. Watched him until it was my turn, he was not the last in line by a long stretch, so I worried less. Waded in last in my wave since I haven't swum much, and just tried to swim easy through the whole swim. Had to go around some breast strokers to avoid getting kicked. Watched for my brother since I thought I might pass him at some point. Ran my face into the corner of the last buoy... not quite sure how that happened, raised up to sight and boom... ah well, found it! Was calm through the whole swim, had a good time, the water didn't feel as cold after about the first 100 yards. It was a good swim. What would you do differently?: Um, train? Nothing different today. Transition 1
Comments: Big uphill to the bikes on fresh chipseal with cold feet - doesn't get much better than that! Was VERY happy to see tri-brother walking up the hill just behind me. I'm not a big transition runner, and that hill just sealed the walking deal. Suit sticks on wrists and ankles, but managed to get it off - good thing, didn't really want to ride in it. Wind still blowing, but warmer. Just had shoes helmet and glasses to put on, plus Garmin for HR. What would you do differently?: Nothing today. Bike
Comments: Fun ride. I love my tri bike, and this was only the second time I've been on it outside all year. Got the usual leg/back cramps about 45 minutes into the ride, but just kept stretching and they eventually went away. Passed a few people, got passed by more people. Played tag with my brother and rang my bell. The out was mostly uphill and false flats - felt like I was working awfully hard for an 11-12mph pace, but since I'd gone into the tri with the attitude that I was just going to enjoy myself, kept the effort level pretty well down and had fun even on the uphills. Didn't realize how much uphill there was until turning around. Downhills are my FRIENDS! FLEW most of the way back - that was a blast! Almost caught my brother but just couldn't quite close those last few yards. What would you do differently?: Nothing today - more training would have been good, but that is always true! Transition 2
Comments: Not much to see here. Transform from biker to runner (well, yes, it IS all relative!) Toes were still cold from swim and ride. Weather was getting nicer and nicer - sunny but still windy. Hat and number belt on while moving. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Wow, less than 10 min/mile for this run is unexpected! I like dirt trails and the first part was on dirt, so just jogged along. Chatted with a fellow that turns out to work with a friend of mine. Was going a little too fast for me so let him go and just kept plodding. Walked all of the water stations and one other time when my HR got up into the high 160s. In fact, HR was too high the whole run but I just couldn't quite bring it down. Felt pretty good despite all that. Was met by a speedy friend who ran me in part of the way - was a nice distraction. What would you do differently?: Nothing today. More transition runs (have done exactly zero in a very long time). Post race
Warm down: Water and walking, headed back to watch more finishers. Theh served a very nice lunch to the athletes with BBQ chicken done just right, yummy potato salad and COOKIES. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing that I could change today. No sleep, long drive, not enough swim/bike training... despite all that, it was one of my most fun races. LOVE racing with my brother, especially when we both have good days. Event comments: Well run, fun race. Weather can be a little iffy this time of year, but this year was perfect. Race shirt is a very nice embroidered sweatshirt. I definitely recommend this race. Last updated: 2012-05-31 12:00 AM

Everything packed and in the car the night before - hooray!
Very very short night due to teenager stress. Got to sleep at 12:30, up at 3:30 to mix nutrition, sunscreen, get dressed and load me and tri-brother into the car. Partway down the road, got a call from teen requiring me to come back home (sorry, brother!) and deal with that... back on the road about 45 minutes later than planned/wanted. Yes, I went to the race anyway! 3 hour drive to race site.
Had coffee at home, Perpetuem and powerbar in car.
Hmmm, not much. Much luck was had before the race... checking directions to find turnoff 10 feet AFTER sign which just allowed us to turn! Got to pick up race packets BEFORE driving back to park 1+ mile away from race site. Got parked and started walk to find a shuttle waiting for us with two seats left inside... Got through the PP line with plenty of time to spare....
Wetsuit on, gel downed, a few strokes in COLD water, then back out to wait for the start.
