Age Group Rank = 31/50
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:15, didn't eat a thing. Drove to course, hydrated on the way.
Event warmup:

Racked bike and set up transition area. Paced nervously for about 2 hours. Took some "Sportslegs" about 45 minutes before swim started.
Swim
  • 17m 49s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

After 200 Meters, I felt terrible. The start wasn't too bad, got bumped a few times, etc, but after 200, I felt like someone put a sail on me and threw it in the water. I did side stroke for a while, but kept going. No problems with goggles, but just couldn't find a good rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Work harder in the open water. There is no substitute for putting in the time in the elements. A pool is nice, but until you get in the water and replicate your pool results there.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Transition 1 went well, except for the fact that I walked the entire time. Without a wetsuit, I only had to put on my helmet, snap the strap and go.
What would you do differently?:

Run with the bike. Could have saved a minute or so here.
Bike
  • 34m 55s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.36 mile/hr
Comments:

A little bit of a problem getting the left foot in the shoe after mounting the bike. Sorry about cutting you off sir! After that, the ride went well. Got in Aero position before the first turn and stayed there until the second descent. Was fairly happy with the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder. I had a little left in the tank that I should have used here.
Transition 2
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

Got helmet off and clipped on race belt. Socks on quickly, took some Gu and some liquid. Shoes went on easily and laces tied. Once again, walked most of the way out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

RUN dummy! Could have saved another minute here.
Run
  • 30m 51s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Easily the longest three miles of my life. My right calf muscle was twitching after the first 100 yards so I knew I was in trouble. Also, hips were VERY tight and legs felt like jello. Walked multiple times during the run, but finished. Took water at the aid station in both directions, seemed to help.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work more on running off the bike, ie, bricks. I've done them directly from spin class to the track, but you're not stuck in the aero position in Spin Class. Hydrate on the bike more as well.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched the hips as much as I could. Drank two Gatorades and some water mix. Walked around a lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think for the first tri, I did well. It was certainly a learning experience.

Event comments:

I sought out volunteers to thank them for their time. I think that's important. Being my first tri, I have nothing to compare it to, but every wave started on time, there were lots of volunteers, and the course was great. I have a goal for next year's time as well!
