Swim
Comments: For the last 20 weeks, when I swim, I start off with an easy 500 and then I would get into my workout. That's been my warm up for every swim. For this race, when the cannon went off, I ran in and swam the first 200 meters at a very high intensity thinking all of a sudden, I was Michael Phelps. I quickly lost my breath and slowed down a bit. When I did that, a bunch of stronger swimmers passed me and I ended up taking a big gulp of water and that wasn't good. I ended up having to do the breast stroke so I would catch my breath and that too was a bad idea. Other swimmers swam over and around me and I was just in everyones way. Yeah, this all happened 50 meters from the start. Anyway, I ended up catching my breath and getting into a nice rhythm for the rest of the swim. What would you do differently?: Not start in the front of my wave and try and swim for 5 min before my next race. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time and got everything situated. I didn't want to forget anything What would you do differently?: Take my time a little faster Bike
Comments: My plan was to go out at a steady high Zone 2 effort and maintain that the entire ride. With all the hills, it was nearly impossible to stay in zone 2, even zone 3 at times, but the desents got me back into zone very quickly. It was a very hilly course and saw a lot of people struggling with some of the hills toward the end of the ride. I live in a very hilly area so my training rides certainly prepared me for this. At mile 20, I saw a guy hit a curb and go flying into a grassy area..I couldn't believe it. His water bottles, sunglasses and some other stuff went flying everywhere. Unfortunatly, he remained clipped into his pedals and his bike looked wrecked as did he. There were volunteers running over to him as I passed. For the next few miles, I was trying to comprehend what I just saw. I felt like I just watched it on a youtube video. I couldn't believe that just happened. I prayed that he was ok. Anyway, the rest of the ride for me went well. I felt strong the entire ride and never once felt like I was overdoing it. I couldn't believe how many people were standing up on their bikes and powering up the hills. I figured I would catch them in the run... What would you do differently?: not much...I took my time and enjoyed the course..My goal was to complete the run comfortablly, not go for a bike PR... Transition 2
Comments: Had a quick transition and felt like i wasn't rushing...good stuff Run
Comments: When I heard that the spawn of satin designed the bike and run course, I knew I had to be discipline this race. I got off the bike and started running and within 5 minutes, my legs felt pretty good. My heart rate was a little higher than I would have liked so I pounded down some water and 2 GU's. I wasn't sure if it was from being a bit dehydrated or if I was just running a bit to fast. Anwyay, by mile 3, my HR was in a better place and I was ready for the big 1 mile climb at mile 3 1/2. The hill started off ok but just kept going and going and going. Half way up, just about everyone was walking and I was steadly running right up the hill. My HR was way to high but I really wanted to run to the top of the hill. The fact that everyone else was walking was motivating me to the top and it worked. I ran all the way up without stopping and enjoyed the slight downhill that followed. My HR settled back down and I continued to run without any issues. I didn't really have much of a run nutrition plan other than a gu every half hour and a banana and some pretzal logs. I drank water at every aid station and by the way, those 8oz water bags were awesome!!! They are called 8toGo and I really like the idea behind them. Anwyay, I kept chugging along, going up and down hill after hill and finally reached mile 10. I remember saying to myself, "I feel great and my legs have plenty left"! I stopped looking at my HR at this point and just ran as fast as I could to the finish, which wasn't that fast but I kept running. I finished the run and didn't walk a step! I was very comfortable the entire run which was my number 1 goal! I was stoked! This was a great race and a huge confidence booster for me with my first Ironman coming up in August! I can't believe how good I felt on the run. Don Fink, your Ironman Plans work amazing! What would you do differently?: Maybe set up a more concrete run nutrition plan... Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I help back on the ride in hopes to having a good run. It worked great. Now I'm only wondering if I could have gone a bit faster on the bike..hmmm Event comments: Great volunteers, great course, and having the transition zone in an amusement park was great for my wife and kids. I absolutly recommend this race to anyone who wants a family friendly, but very challenging course. Revolution 3 put on a great event! Last updated: 2012-06-04 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4, was driving to the race by 4:15. I had a med cup of coffee, a bowl of oatmeal with mixed fruit and a glazed doughnut stick from Dunking Doughnuts. I also had a premixed Perform drink that I was sipping up until the race start. Had a GU 10 min before swim start.
No warm-up and I paid for it. You'll see why in the swim segment.
