Run
Comments: Started fine. Because of heat warnings, I and probably many others, held back a bit. Legs felt good - some tightness in hips but not bad. Walked about 10-20 yards per mile. Split had me running sub 10' but fell off of that pace in the last half. Regret being talked out bringing fuel belt! Overall, the heat did not play that much of a role. There was sufficient shade and breeze plus the many lawn sprinklers. What would you do differently?: Train more (obviously!) Walk less Left it all out on the course. (Side note: I had to work the night shift after the race so did not want to feel like garbage all night!) Post race
Warm down: Walked. Hydrate. Stretched. Felt surprisingly good at the end of the run. Not out of breath or stiff - that came later. I felt elated that I had accomplished this event (my first) What limited your ability to perform faster: I will NOT say heat because for me it did not factor. Lack of training and lack of heart to put it all out. There were points where I just quit running for some inexplicable reason. That said, this is a benchmark run for me as this is only my second run event in recent years. My first was a 5 miler that I ran at a pace of 10:54. Sports math shows I shaved a whopping 35" off of that time! I am most proud of that. Event comments: Without volunteers events like these would just not work and peoples' well being would be jeopardized. I appreciate all of the hard work these fine folks put in to make this one of the premier 10k races in the country. This event has been going on yearly for 35+ years and it shows. Very well run event. The organizers obviously look for ways to improve the event and listen to feedback from participants and volunteers. I will definitely run this again next year (God willing and the creeks don't rise!) Last updated: 2012-06-09 12:00 AM
