Swim
Comments: White caps coming directly perpendicular to the swim line from the right for the first side of the triangle, into the wind for the second side, and white caps from the left for the third side. Waves before us had sighting issues and cut at the wrong buoy for the first turn. Swim was relaxed and the event gives plenty of time between waves. Lots of weeds in the course, seems like about 2/3 the race was spent touching milfoil. Caught some the waves in front of us on the second and third legs. Left a lot on the swim course, should have pushed a lot harder. I had been swimming about 1:48-1:52 per 100 in the pool, but as usual haven't been able to translate it to open water. What would you do differently?: Continue to work to get faster in the pool and work on more open water swimming. Train more. Transition 1
Comments: A little bit of a run from swim exit to transiton area due to the low water in the lake. Transition area was a little tight. Wetsuit off and then helmet on and run to the Mount line. Bike
Comments: Out and Back course that had elevation gain on the way out 18.9 mph average, that you got on the way back 20.1 mph avaerage. The road had some big potholes and a lot of large cracks. Couldn't see a lot of the potholes until the last minute. Some where pretty big hits, primarly while passing. Thought that I might of flatted once or twice and was concerned about my frame (6'7" 210 lbs.) on more than one occasion. To give you an idea, my Nike GPS watch (with slap-a-lap) accidently recorded 81 laps on the bike and put it self into pause twice. Spun out the last 1/2 mile to get legs ready for the run. What would you do differently?: Train more, only got three weeks in before the event. Transition 2
Comments: Good transtion, didn't slow down until right when I got the transition line. Run
Comments: Excellent run course. Shaded pretty much the whole way. Started out at 9:00 minute/mile pace out of transition and picked up pace in intervals from that point. Felt like I could have pushed the pace a little more and held a lot in reserve. What would you do differently?: Train more. Post race
Warm down: 2 mile cooldown, great breakfast burrito from the event, and a bannana What limited your ability to perform faster: I only started training three weeks ago after losing 40 punds througha restricted diet and I will still be in a base building phase for the next several weeks/ months/ who knows...years. The speed will come, I just need to work on the technical elements (ie. swimming). Event comments: By far the best race that I have been to, the race was well organized and a first class event. I will definitiely try and make it back in furture years. OptumHealth Performance did a great job putting on the event. Last updated: 2012-06-10 12:00 AM

Stayed at the White Bear Country Inn to make it easy for the family to attend the event. Plus we could take the baby swimming on Saturday and relax in the hotel room and sleep in a little bit on Sunday instead of having to drive from home. Up at 5:45 and out the door soon after. Got to race site within 1 minute. Had VIP parking since I train with Optum Health Performance. Got transition set-up, Peanut Butter PowerBar about an hour before the event. Gu Roctane about 15 minutes before the event.
Rode about 1 mile to get the juices flowing the legs and to get shoes attached to the pedals. Ran about 1/2 mile easy with drills. No Swim.
