Pre-race routine:

Sat. traveled to Winston for packet pick up and took a ride around the course for a preview. Glad I did. Note to self, when staying with friends the night before a race make sure they aren't having a cookout to watch the big game. Although, I must say, my buddy derek came through in the clutch and offered up his bedroom so I could crash early. Went and had some great italian food. Tossed and turned a bit (prerace jitters)before finally falling asleep. Awoke, dressed and left. Arrived about 6:15ish, plenty of time..since my frickin' swim time wasn't until 9:41 (you're right Jenn..i don't think it was changed) setup my gear then to warmup. My mom, grandmother, and great aunt came to watch, which was sweet.
Event warmup:

Went for a short run to warm up. This was a change from the last race and I want to standardize a warmup routine. Going to work on that. Shouldve had a second pair of shoes to run closer to my swim time. Need to get the logistics down.

Comments:

I signed up for this race as my first and did so at the beginning of the summer, sooo my time was rEEally slow. I changed it by the deadline, but as I was informed there would be a chance that it would not be changed and I don't believe it was. Obviously I shouldve been swimming around 150ish and I swam #348. The water was chilly probably low to mid 70's (i prob suck at estimating). I started and it only took me about a lap and a half to catch the first person, from there it was atleast one per lap and on one lap two at the wall...pain in the neck, for real!! I saw this coming early on... Get a clue people...there's no way you can do 1:30/100's by doing the damn BREAST STROKE. I felt bad for the early crew, people who were going off in the first 60 or so people were side and/or breast stroking halfway through the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Accurately assess my time the first time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

The transition area was set up in the grass as opposed to the parking lot. Knowing that I didn't need to get any dirt in my cleats I grabbed my shoes with my bike and decided to just put them on at the mount/dismount area. Saw someone early on do this with speedplays and decided to go with it. Probably need to practice with the shoes already in the pedals, but I wasn't even going to let the race be my first attempt.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to mount with the shoes in place already.
Bike
  • 40m 41s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

The dismount was slow due to putting my shoes on there. As I said before, gotta practice this before Pinehurst. Out and the first loop was pretty good. I definitely knew I was pushing harder than the last race. I kept a pretty steady burn until probably a little over halfway through, became a little more comfortable in stride. The low point was probably being passed by a 50 some yr old man climbing a steady grade. Felt pretty good coming back into the park and knew that I had the steepest climb to come. I set my gearing pretty well I thought and used as much of my downhill momentum to climb until I slowed to where I was geared. I popped out of the saddle...oh remember that old guy...yeah smoked him on this climb. Finished pretty strong (grandma was proud), which felt good...until I started to run. I dismounted decent and tried running with my bike shoes on, but it didn't work too well. So I stopped just entering the transition area and popped them off.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Just kind of lolly gagged, I reckon. This being my first race with the clipless probably was to blame for part of it. I also want to start trying to run in my running shoes without socks, that would definitely save some time.
What would you do differently?:

Work on the shoes issue.
Run
  • 30m 11s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

The first part of the run was tough. I'm not sure if the more intense climb right at the end of the bike was the cause, but it took me a good 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile to get comfortable in the run. After I got my heart rate and breathing under control I fell into my "could run like this forever" pace. Oh and the really cool old guy from earlier that I was battling on the bike. Yep, he was here on the run as well. He passed me on the run, and then started walking...I passed him. The next thing I know here he comes by me again, and what'd you know he stays in front for a little while and starts walking. Probably the second or third time he came by, I stared pacing with him. I knew if I couldn't keep the pace, so I fell back down into my pace and shortly passed him again. After this, I didn't see him again and that was right before the last 3/4 climb to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

log more miles...push a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Picked up something to eat and downed a couple of waters. Cheered the others on and talked with the fam.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Preparation and probably not pushing harder.

Event comments:

It being the angels race, I did it in honor of my cousin,(Rick) who was recently and unexpectedly killed. This made it a little rough on my aunt. It was a good time and a great race. It definitely pumped me up for Pinehurst and training for Duke next year. Made me realize how important other races are to keep me motivated towards the A race.
