Swim
Comments: My only goal for the swim was not to shred my shoulder. I haven't done a swim workout since April, when I got in the pool 2x. Before that I think it might have been January. When I swam about 10 strokes over Memorial Day weekend, my shoulder hurt for a couple days afterwards. My goal was to make it through the 1/3 mile with no shoulder pain. So I tried to swim consciously and strong and very consistent. I think I did all of those things. I focused hard on the stroke and made it relaxed and did not think of speed. I knew my time would not be good, but I didn't worry about that - I thought if I lost a couple minutes on the swim, who cares? Transition 1
Comments: I love my transitions now. I am proud of them. This was the 3rd fastest in my division and 4th fastest overall female T1. If I can make up time in one place when I'm out of shape, it's transitions. So I practiced them Saturday night before the race. I'm glad I did. I felt smooth and easy and relaxed. Go me! Bike
Comments: I'm happy with my bike ride. I am ecstatic that I was faster than last year. I did not look at my watch the entire time - I just rode for fun. I love how Pearl feels - I just enjoyed passing people. I was not passed by a female the entire time. I stayed in aero position for the vast majority of the time which felt awesome. I sit up going around corners for the most part. Between last year and this year I've changed ALL of my bike equipment - and apparently it paid off because with a quarter of the conditioning, I rode a tiny bit faster. But it was faster! I didn't deserve that given the amount of work I put in - but I'll take it! I guess there's something to be said for good equipment. One thing I did note is that I drank my entire bottle of Ironman Perform. I don't think I have EVER done that in a sprint. I wanted a little more at the end. Out of shape Nancy drinks more apparently... Transition 2
Comments: Another great transition - except I made one mistake and forgot the bike in point was one rack over, so at first I turned the wrong way - I could have saved a few seconds there. No big loss though - I'm still psyched with how my transitions have improved. 3rd in my age group. The only thing I Have to work on is how early I should take my feet out of the shoes, and how slowly I should be moving before I jump off my bike. I was going a little fast this time so I rode along on one pedal for a while before I was willing to jump down. There was a woman in the way as I ran into transition and I almost ran her over - she wasn't pleased. (I'm sure she promptly passed me on the run and was smiling about it) Run
Comments: This is where the wheels came off. I knew they would - so I did as well as I could during the rest of the race. My running is where I've lost all my conditioning - it's the one I have to work hardest at keeping up. I couldn't stay relaxed and my HR was hopping - I finally let it soar into zone 5 at the end and hoped for the best. Let two people in my age group pass me on the run - sucks. What would you do differently?: Train. Post race
Warm down: None What limited your ability to perform faster: I didn't do any preparation for this race. Event comments: I love this race - it's my hometown race and I want it to be fun. And it didn't disappoint, even though I wasn't the same racer I was last year. I did beat my time from the first year (just barely) so that was nice. I was pleased to have a decent bike performance and to see the improvement in my transitions make up for some of my lack of swimming and running ability. I had fun and that's what it was about - and was not embarassed in my performance. Last updated: 2012-06-12 12:00 AM

But first let me preface this entire report by saying I am woefully out of shape going into this race. Since running Boston on April 16 - I have run and biked 4 times each. I have lost all sense of conditioning and gained not a small amount of weight. I was out to have fun on this race day - and enjoy the wonderful sport called triathlon. I do love it.
Arrived an hour early, set up transition, used the porta-potty - ran by to thank Chris for being there - he asked how my bike was and I said I hadn't been on it yet. Which struck me as I said it - wow, that's dumb. Picked it up on Weds - thinking I should ride it before the race. So I hopped out on it for maybe 6-7 minutes - nothing fancy. Then did approximately a 3 minute run that almost killed me. Laughed to myself thinking I did not want to blow all my energy on the warm up - settle down! Took the NEMS pic, put on the wetsuit (first time since September - silly!), did a few strokes, back broke open. Good thing I tried that out. Mike fixed me and I got in line for my wave. Last in line. Whew.
