Set Up Events
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 38m 56s
Overall Rank = 126/402
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 14/49
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:45. Breakfast: Coffee, bagel with peanut butter and honey and a banana.
Event warmup:

Walked the transition area and jogged through the swim exit to transition. 5-10 minute swim warm-up.
Gel 15 prior to swim start.
Swim
  • 17m 38s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt a few uncomfortable anxious "pangs" when starting out. HR felt like it was through the roof and I hadn't been in a mass open water swim start since last year. Settled into a groove and did well.
What would you do differently?:

Have more control on the start. Inadvertently switched to bilateral breathing occasionally. Would be better off breathing from one side during such a hard effort. Learn more about drafting in the water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Long run to transition area. However, I am just slow at transition. I have to get faster. Respectable transition times of 1 minute would have moved me up approximately 4-5 spots and into the top 20 for age group.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more before the race so that my movements are more automatic. I am still spending considerable time thinking through each thing I need. Transition was better than last year in general, though.

Bike
  • 49m 34s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 21.18 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode this pretty much how I planned.
What would you do differently?:

I need to consider adding more electrolytes. My calves started cramping a little. I usually try to get my electrolytes from gel. I only took one gel about 3/4 into the bike. Maybe take a gel early or add something to my water.
Transition 2
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

Tying shoes is slow.
What would you do differently?:

Get speed laces. Open shoes wider. Leave race belt clipped and pull on over head.
I saw someone running out and they just pulled the race belt on over their head. This will be much quicker. It's amazing how much my hands fumble with my HR up so high.
Practice, practice, practice.
Run
  • 26m 25s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I did fine on the run. Held back intentionally for training purposes. Still, Lack of brick training was evident. Not in that phase for my A priority, IMFL in November, so no big deal there.
What would you do differently?:

Take electrolytes on the bike. Continued to feel cramping in calves and a side stitch during the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Yoga stretches.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mid training for IMFL. No taper. This was a training day.

Event comments:

The swim distance should have been more accurate. I understand there will be a little variability because it is open water, but this missed the mark by a few football fields. I bet it sucked big time for a first timer without much swim experience.

Swimming
00:17:38 | 820 yards | 02m 09s / 100yards
Age Group: 14/49
Overall: 126/402
Performance: Good
My actual pace was 1:28 for 1188 yards This swim was no where close to 820yds. My Timex mapped it at 1184yards. I swam straight and hard.
Suit:
Course: This course was a perfect example of why bilateral breathing is an important skill. Land was on the left with left turns. I started out harder than I planned. Holding back up front will take some discipline. Still, I ended up doing fine. Spent most of the day after the race thinking I needed to rethink my goals for future events. My time was waaayyy off what I expected. I heard plenty of other athletes talking about the long course....I feel great about my swim after finding out the true distance of the course. Actual distance 1188yds.

Course: Nice course. Fairly flat. A little elevation through the second mile, but you get to run back down it too. Loved the ground. Ran on grass/dirt through much of the course. Only a few spots that you need to watch your footing.
