Swim
Comments: Swim starts with the 1st bouy/turn only 100 yds or so out. All men and relays in the first wave makes it a little crowded at the first turn. Things sorted out well after the first bouy though and wasnt much contact the rest of the way. Boat ramp was a little slippery coming out but made it out ok and headed for transition. What would you do differently?: Try to get through the first section with a little less contact? Transition 1
Comments: Transition was good. One of my goals today was quick transitions. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: Here's where things went wrong. Headed out on the bike and immediately starting passing a lot of people.Apparently there was a course change announcement that I didn't hear. In my mind I knew the course from the race map on the website. After moving up towards the front of the race, I see a volunteer holding a flag at his side standing on the side of the road right where another road comes meets up. I think, ok this must be where we we come back out onto this road after completing the loop. I point straight ahead to confirm my direction and I get no reaction or response from the volunteer so on I go. After a few minutes of not catching anyone I'm starting to get the "uh oh" feeling. Another minute goes by without catching anyone or anyone in sight behind me. Make a quick u-turn and start hammering back. sure enough get back to where the volunteer was and there is now a steady stream of bikes turning around.I know I'm screwed at this point as I rode an extra 4 miles or so but decide to just hammer as hard as I can and see what happens. Passed a lot of racers on my way back in but was pretty far back in the field now. What would you do differently?: Stay on course! Transition 2
Comments: Good clean and quick transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Knew I had a lot of work to do so went out pretty fast and decided I was going to go hard and try to hold it until the end. quickly started passing people and picked off several in my AG. Still had no idea how many in my AG were in front of me at this point though. Continued to push myself as hard as I could without blowing up. at 1/2 mile to go there were a small group a couple hundred yds ahead. I targeted them and eventually passed them all but one. He was going well and looked as if he might be in my AG. I continued to accelerate until I came up on his shoulder with about 250 yds to go. Boom, he accelerates, he got about a 10' gap but I was able to close it and continue matching his acceleration. I knew this was going to go right to the line so I stayed with him until about 75 yds and then I sprinted. He couldn't match and fell back a couple seconds and that was the pass I needed to get 3rd in my AG. What would you do differently?: Nothing. That was about as fast as I can do 3 miles currently. Post race
Warm down: Stretching. Hanging out with Alissa and Rhett waiting for awards. A couple waters and a little food. Event comments: This was my first TriMax event and they did a good job except for the less than enthusiastic volunteer at the bike turn around. I would race in more of their events and will probably do this one next year. Last updated: 2012-06-17 12:00 AM
