Run
Comments: because of the last minute conversion from a Triathlon to a Duathlon and not necessarily knowing how fast to go to ensure to save my legs i tried to keep with an 8 min pace. i think this idea worked out perfect and i was able to run stride for stride with my kid brother the whole time. What would you do differently?: not much...maybe some more water... but not too bad at all. Transition 1
Comments: my first ever transition experience was interesting. def a strange sensation of having to 'find' your spot. i took my time, put on my shoes, ate a banana and drank some water and jogged with bike to exit. my clip in was much more difficult ... i think i was rushing and wasted a good 5 to 10 seconds... in the grand scheme though it wasnt much at all. What would you do differently?: i think i will bring a water bottle with me on the bike and drink it quick and dispose of it at water transition 1.5 miles down the road instead of spending the extra 30-45 seconds in transition drinking. need to learn some heart rate reduction techniques. also put a balloon at my spot to ease the mini, momentary panic and disorientation when first entering transition. Bike
Comments: the bike course was a blast. the first hill is very disheartening but after getting back onto west river drive i was able to find a comfort zone. i am very pleased with a 19.6 pace and again was able to stay with my brother for most of the time. he was either a few seconds ahead or behind or on ocassion right next to me. the hills were hard of course but very enjoyable. What would you do differently?: i wouldnt change much at all... probably only eat half a banana in transition though because there were moments when i felt full and didnt take in fluids because of it. other then that i felt good... the unexpected first run did not have much of an affect if any at all, i completed it faster then i had hoped and was able to ride with my brother. whats to complain about. Transition 2
Comments: another VERY SLOW transition... walked with bike and had to put socks back on since i ride without. avioded another banana because of previously mentioned 'fullness'. drank some H2O. grabbed a bottle and headed out. the run out is actually very long which probably added more to the time as well but i avoided feeling 'rushed' which is what i wanted. What would you do differently?: maybe start riding with socks to avoid the time spent putting them on. jogging with bike instead of walking. Run
Comments: the first 'out and back' portion is nice. has some trees as a canopy which keeps it cooll (if only mentally since it was pretty overcast). the 'back' was a slight downhill which was nice and improved my back by about 30 seconds over my 'out'. the second 'out and back' is a different story. it is very flat but very open with absolutely no canopy. (again, im not sure how much this really affected anything since it was cloudy). my brother and i again were able to stay basically stride for stride for the first 4 to 4.5 miles then his 'flat foot' problem started up and he had to fall back. i think i could have run slightly faster but it was enjoyable running with corey as much as we did and i finished really strong. What would you do differently?: i ran with coco, finsihed strong and had fun so nothing at all. Post race
Warm down: nothing... hung with fam... waited for uncle... drank a beer. What limited your ability to perform faster: transitions need to def improve. Event comments: great race... great organization... they handled the swim cancellation and the run addition really well and even though you could tell they were upset to cancel it, they looked out for swimmers health and made the right decision.
