Overall Rank = 72/187
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 4/10
Pre-race routine:

Watched my son compete -- was fun watching him do so well.
Event warmup:

Just a bit of stretching / no swim, bike or run (did ride for 2 minutes to test gears)
Swim
  • 10m 17s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was not ready to race when I hit the pool. Took it nice and easy / just like a "normal" 1000 yard effort. It went easy / did feel a bit tired on a couple of occasions.
What would you do differently?:

Need to trust my training and go after the swim. 400 yards is less than 10 minutes and there is no reason I can not go at this aggressively given my cardio fitness / lack of leg use (i.e. minimal risk of hurting the bike or run)
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

A bit of trouble getting the socks on and then got my gloves stuck as well. Not quite as fast as last year, but can't expect a lot without practice!
What would you do differently?:

Practice!
Bike
  • 43m 21s
  • 13.22 miles
  • 18.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt like the bike was my best part of the event here. I could tell at the start my thighs were a little tight, but I "read" them well. Used the gears to adjust the effort to give myself rest if/when I needed it. By the end was turning around 100rpm with minimal stress on the legs and holding solid speed. Noticed that I really did the hills well. Certainly would like to have gone faster, but think the effort here was just about perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Race wise, not a lot. If I could feel like this on every bike segment I would be very happy. The "different" is in training / doing some more high intensity work and more TITS
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Again, a little bit slow / lack of practice.
What would you do differently?:

Practice!
Run
  • 26m 33s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Miles were 8:15, 8:45 and 8:30. Pacing was very solid. However, felt terrible through out due to my stupidity in drinking too much. Felt as if I had a bowling ball in my stomach. The good news is that I adjusted to the feeling and got just about all I could out of the run. Feel as if I could have pushed a bit harder; however, was close to tossing cookies a couple of times / did adjust effort based on stomach. Did finish with a reasonable kick / felt good!
What would you do differently?:

Two things here. First, need to do some more speed work / high intensity work. I'll be looking to end all of my workouts with the last mile at a near all out effort to remedy this. Second, need to trust the hydration early AM and not pound the water / gatorade right before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

No real warm down. Felt great afterwards / could tell the HR came down nicely.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Several things. First the fear factor on pushing too hard -- both in practice and during the race. Second -- and this is the big one -- don't drink too much!!! Finally, the need to do some speed work in practice.

Event comments:

The best part of a race report is that it lets you reflect and evaluate what did and did not go well. Yesterday and today have been really hard as the numbers I was looking for did not materialize. That was really tough to swallow given all of the training I have put in. However, after replaying things in my mind, there are a lot more positives than negatives surrounding yesterday. First, I learned a ton and all of the "negatives" are easy to correct / the mistakes are part of the learning process. Second, I pulled the race off with no physical problem. My training has paid dividends in the area of health and that's why I started doing this. Third, while I made mistakes, I did not compound them / I adjusted to the challenges I was facing and got out of my body what I could given the conditions. Need to remember that in any event, there's somethings you can control and some you can not. You "play the hand you are dealt" and get out of it what you can. I played it well, had a good time, learned, and am better for the effort!

Effort felt solid. Think I was in the 160-170 range the entire time based on RPE.
Course: Flat run out and back. Shoulders were soft and fairly smooth so I stayed on them to go easy on the legs.
