Pre-race routine:

Wifey had a nighttime trail race the night before, and we didn't get to the hotel in Marble Falls until about 10:30-11:00 pm. Ate real quick and fell asleep, woke up at 5 am and felt fine. I got some good sleep on Friday night so I wasn't too worried about it. Had a granola bar and coffee, went out the door and drove about 5 min to the start. Parking is kind of crazy around the area, so we just found a spot on the street. Walked over to transition and set up near the bike out, as I still don't have the flying mount/dismount down yet. Got all my stuff laid out, spoke with Dwight for a bit, then hit the porta john before the line got too long and got my timing chip. Had a Gu about 30 min before the 7:00 start.
Event warmup:

Swam in the water for about 300-400 yards or so. It was super warm, like bathwater. I couldn't believe anyone would wear a wetsuit in that stuff, but I saw it!

Not a great swim. I got into a good rythm, but I was breathing on every stroke and constantly looking around to make sure I wasn't running into someone else. Seemed really crowded. Some dude couldn't swim straight at all and kept on running into me, smacking me in the back of my head with his stroke and grabbing my legs. Just a real PITA. For some reason I just didn't have the drive/motivation to go hard... I guess I was thinking I should hold back because the bike is longer than a normal sprint and all I've done this season is sprints. HR was ~155-160 out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a bit harder, draft better, stick to bilateral breathing...
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s

Need to learn the flying mount and stop being so slow in transition!
  • 1h 05m 54s
  • 23 miles
  • 20.94 mile/hr

Had a pretty good bike. HR was kinda high at first, about 155 out of the water and quickly up to 160. Then the first hill or 2 I was at 172 and decided to slow it down and bring down the HR to the 155-160 range. I kept it there pretty comfortably during the rest of the ride. For this distance I think I paced it pretty well, although my run was a little slower than usual. I chalk that up to motivation, not going to hard on the bike. Had a bottle of water between the aero bars, worked pretty well. I stayed in aero the whole time except a few up hills, which is when I took a sip of water. Had a Gu at about mile 18-19 to get ready for the run. Here is the bike leg:
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s

I was going to attempt the flying dismount at least, but I totally forgot until I got to the dismount line. Oh well! Ran in my shoes to the rack to discover the rack next to mine had fallen over. People's shitake was everywhere. Luckily my rack was ok. Racked the bike and put on the shoes and took off.

Started off ok, kept a nice pace with a fast cadence. I don't know why, I just didn't have the motivation to hurt a bit more and go faster. I wasn't hurting too bad, I just wanted to be done. You can see in my splits though I was progressivly getting a bit slower. So maybe it was some of both. Overall not a horrible run, but I know I could have put myself in the pain cave a bit more and gone harder and faster. Here is the run leg:
What would you do differently?:

run faster! isn't that always the answer?
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water and sat down for a bit, then saw wifey and went to her. She was hurting a bit from her race the night before, so we left kinda quick and went to transition to pick up my bike. Spoke with Mario the Race director for a bit and told him how much I enjoyed the course and he put on a great race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

motivation, or lack thereof.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed the race overall. No complaints at all, and I'll definitely do it again next year!

ETA: A week later the race results show me as in 4th in my AG instead of 5th. Guess someone ahead of me got DQ'd (maybe the guy with the 4:30 min/mile splits!) and the 3rd place guy only beat me by 45 seconds or so. So now looking back at my lack of motivation to go harder, i'm a bit pissed off because I could have beat him and got on the podium. He was dying on the run too. Live and learn. I hope to not make that mistake twice!
