Age Group Rank = 2/17
Pre-race routine:

Ate some breakfast - waffles and egg with cheese, orange juice and coffee. I wasnt worried about eating such a big breakfast knowing that I had 4 hrs until my wave start-time. Got down to Sandy Hollow early - took the shuttle into the park, and made it to the transition area by 6:30.
Event warmup:

This race was unique in that the start was so late. Gave us lots of time to set everything up at a very stress-free pace, but by the time we started, I was really ready to start!! Watched the kids race, which was really cute, ran a little bit and swam a little bit to warm up.

Comments:

Swam way off course into the middle of the race route in between the out and back - there were quite a few other girls over there with me, due to the fairly strong current pulling in that direction. I have really got to work on sighting - I have come to rely way too much on drafting during my group open-water swims, and not sighting enough, because I always know the person I'm drafting off of, and can depend on their sighting ability. Clearly not the case in this race. I am really surprised that I pulled off fourth in my age group because 2:40/100y is a dismal pace. Felt pretty good through the swim - strong and smooth - just ended up swimming some extra yardage due to poor navigation. Not happy when I looked at my watch coming out of the water. This was the first race that I opted to not wear a wetsuit in, and almost everyone else did wear a wetsuit. Really not sure how much of a difference that made.
What would you do differently?:

Work on navigation!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Being that I did not wear a wetsuit, this was a pretty quick T1 - no problems at all. I did wear socks that I ended up having to sit down to put on, so it could have been a little faster if I had gone sockless. I will need some better bike shoes before that can happen though.

Comments:

Went out on the bike course with a mission to pass every woman I could see - which I pretty much accomplished. I did not see one other woman in my age group on the bike or run, which at the time, I didn't know if that was good or bad - now I know, it was very good - there was only one ahead of me - by about one minute. The big hill was tough, and I braked more than I should have coming back down. The turn-around was a little tight also - almost went into the cones!! Otherwise, I was pretty happy with this.
What would you do differently?:

Stay off the brakes!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Didn't take much time to drink while riding, so took a few extra seconds to get some Cytomax in before beginning the run. Would have been more efficient to do all my drinking on the bike.
Run
  • 24m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Pushed it throughout the entire run to stay under 8:00/mile. Walked at the aid stations to get some water in and douse myself. Couldn't have gone better. This is a major PR for me by far.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited around for the race results to be posted - and actually ended up not finding out that I made second in my age group until they called me up to the podium!! Very, very exciting moment!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor navigation in the swim.

Event comments:

Very well organized, well-run race. I would do this race again.

Course: Smooth road - one big hill (like, really big). Gentle rollers otherwise. There were two cattle guards that I thought might be an issue, but they were fairly effectively covered. It would have been nice if they had covered the entire width of the road rather than just one section, because I had to slow down on the way back due to a guy in front of me taking his time going over the wood. It was not big enough to pass on the cattle guard, so I had to wait until he was clear. Also the chute coming back into transition got pretty narrow, and once again, got stuck behind a guy who was wobbling all over the place, having no choice but to stay behind him til the end.
