Total Time = 2h 25m 28s
Overall Rank = 46/960
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/53
Pre-race routine:

The usual. Coffee, wheat bagel and Ensure. Had a Honey Stinger Waffle while setting up transition. Headed over and was one of the first in transition. Took the bus to swim start
Event warmup:

Not much. A few stretches to try to work on my tight calves. No warm up swim allowed
Swim
  • 23m 33s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt comfortable throughout the swim. Probably could have pushed a little harder but a solid swim for me.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a bit harder
Transition 1
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

Could have shaved a few seconds but OK
Bike
  • 1h 10m 14s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 22.30 mile/hr
Comments:

A little disappointed with my time given my power numbers. Headwind on the return may have been partly responsible. Felt good on the bike and hit planned watts. Right out of T1 I hit a bump and lost the cap on my aerobottle. Accelerade splashed all over me and the bike. Drank a good bit of what was left to keep it from sloshing out on the rest of the ride. Since it was going to be such a hot day I had another water bottle on the frame. AP227/NP236 IF.873
What would you do differently?:

Not take a bath in Accelerade. Made for a sticky ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Lost a couple of seconds trying to remember where the run out was. Other than that it was fine.
Run
  • 47m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew the run was going to be brutal given the heat. Decided to start slow and try to build into the run. Stopped at first 2 water stations to take in some water and ate a gel mile 2. First 2 miles were around 8 min pace due to the stops. Next 2 miles were 7:20-7:30 pace. Faded a bit from around 4.5-5.25 miles and then ran up the hill (UGH!). Down the stairs and pushed as hard as I could to the finish. Miles 4 to finish were probably around 7:40 pace
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Had to adjust pace given the heat. Really faded on the run the prior year so satisfied with this effort.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the misting tent for a few minutes. Volunteers were great with ice bags. Watched Michael/Experior finish his race with a nice run. Visited, ate, cleaned up transition and hung around for awards

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was ready for the race. Training has been good. Nothing you can do about the heat other than adjust pace and try to manage your race.

Event comments:

My 3rd year doing the race and it is always well done. Lots of great volunteers. Great job by Team Magic.
