Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon so i didnt really know what to do. I got there really early and ended up just wandering around for a couple hours, trying to get the pre-race jitters to go away. luckily they went away as soon as i got in the water.
Swim
  • 12m 11s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

First open water swim and first group start. Tried to pace my breathing and swiming like in the pool but that went out the window after a few minutes. Tried to adapt, breathing after every stroke and keeping a smooth stroke. Got into a groove for the last 2 or 3 minutes but by then the damage was done.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get stronger in the water, practice spotting, and do something about my breathing (possibly 1 breath per 2 strokes, rather than per 4 strokes).
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

I was a little light headed so i wasnt thinking 100% clearly, though i didnt think this was terrible for my first transition ever.

Bike
  • 43m 44s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.05 mile/hr
Comments:

This was terrible. I was using a bike I bought on amazon to commute to work on. turns out its a wal-mart "road" bike and it deffinitely raced like one. I think i was passed by around 40 or 50 people and passed 0 poeple. it was pretty demoralizing. i was peddaling as hard as i could and people were flying by me exerting half as much energy. when i got off the bike my legs were destroyed.
What would you do differently?:

I bought a new tri bike so that will help immediatley. Also, put more miles on the bike every week.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

i biked in my running shoes so i just got off my bike and started running. this was a little slower than it could have been because my legs were dead and took a second to get going.
What would you do differently?:

i was pretty happy with this transition
Run
  • 23m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

considering how bad my legs felt after the bike, i was suprised how well i did here. I passed a few of the people who passed me on the bike and a had a good kick in to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more bricks to get my legs used to running after the bike.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

My bike really killed me. Also my lack of open water swim experience. In all,I really enjoyed my first triathlon. I will start working harder and get the right gear to help me improve.

Event comments:

Overall, a great first triathlon experience. The volunteers were all great and it was a great venue.
