Swim
Comments: The improvised nose clips worked well, and I actually also thought I did a decent job navigating buoy to buoy, but somehow my pace on the swim was not what I wanted. I'm not a great swimmer but I've done about 7:30 for 400yds in the pool a few times this summer, and so I expected something like that for this race. However, it's difficult to pace oneself on an open water swim. My plan had originally been to swim the swim and race the bike and run, and perhaps I took that too literally. I also forgot to start my watch at the beginning of the race. The swim did feel very easy though, and I had a lot of energy for the bike and run. What would you do differently?: Bring multiple sets of equipment. Transition 1
Comments: This was very slow considering I wasn't wearing a wetsuit. I couldn't find my bike initially, and had trouble getting my shoes and socks on. Bike
Comments: A decent bike ride on a hilly course. I should try to push a little more on the downhills. Transition 2
Comments: I don't know what is taking so long. I ride with straps and don't change shoes, so I should be able to just park the bike and take off. Run
Comments: I'd hoped to do a little better than this on the run. I have been doing bike+run workouts with the run portion below 8 min/miles, but that was earlier in the morning. Overall the race was good, but not great. I had hoped to break 1:30, but it was significantly better than the same race last year. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and waited for my family to show up. My kids were doing the youth triathlon. Event comments: A good race that was well organized. Last updated: 2012-07-02 12:00 AM

This race is close and starts late, so I got up at 7, have some granola and coffee, and head off. I still got there an hour and a half before the race started and spent the time wandering around and admiring all the excellent triathlon bikes.
About twenty minutes before the start, I went in to do a swimming warmup and discovered my first error of the day. Because it was a bright sunny day, I had brought my blue tinted goggles. Through the blue tinted goggles, the bright orange buoys looked the same color as the water, dark blue. At that point it was little too rushed to think about getting another pair of goggles. I went to the back-up plan, which was following all of the many people in front of me.
Then, came the second major swimming error of the day. As I was swimming back to shore at the end of the warm up, my nose clips gracefully fell of my nose and sank to the bottom of the murky lake, presumably for all time. This had never, ever, happened before and I did not have a spare one. I really cannot swim well without them.
I started looking around for anything that might serve as improvised nose clips (like a paper clip or something) and eventually found on the beach a broken plastic ring of some sort that worked.
