Swim
Comments: It was a violent swim that never thinned out. I expected it at the start and the buoys, but it was constant. Guess that's just something I need to get accustomed to. I swam the last half of the race with a hand in front of me to keep from getting punched/kicked/elbowed in the face again. Goggles leaking, and then fogged up for last half, but I was able to make out the splashing of the mass and follow it in. What would you do differently?: Wear a helmet. Transition 1
Comments: I was just so happy to have survived the swim, I took my time. What would you do differently?: Hurry up. Bike
Comments: I've never hit 39-40 mph on my bike before this. That was the most awesome part of this race! What would you do differently?: Train harder on hills, if I can find some...there are none that big down here on the coast. Transition 2
Comments: Again, wasn't really in a hurry. Bike course completely kicked my butt. Run
Comments: Run course only had two hills on it. The rest was flat on a nicely paved track around the lake. I was pretty much out of gas after the swim and that hilly bike course, so I just shuffled through this. The volunteers were picking up the course barricades and markers before many of us "back of packers" were through. I, along with another runner, ran past the entrance to the track about 15 yards and had to backtrack to go through the gate when we heard the volunteers yelling at us. What would you do differently?: Need to train for a faster run. My pace is TERRIBLE! Post race
Warm down: Ran right through the finish to some very nice outdoor showers they had set up and drenched myself. AWESOME! What limited your ability to perform faster: ME!!!! I seriously need to step it up. My only goal so far has been to finish, and now I've finished 3 this distance. Now I need to do a little better. Event comments: This was a very challenging course for a beginner. Pros: Lots of water stations on run, water with ice! They also handed out sponges soaked in ice water on the run. The guy at the last water station that was throwing ice water on us as we went by was wonderful! They give you a nice shirt AND a nice visor for this race. There were lots of great volunteers and the park where the swim and run were held was beautiful. Parking was right there at the transition. And LOVED the outdoor showers they set up to rinse the lake water and sweat off before I ate. Cons: No bike numbers, so it was basically just an honor system that everyone would leave with the bike they came with. Roads were extremely rough on bike route (but I still enjoyed it).
