Graniteman Endurance Series
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 4s
Overall Rank = 62/316
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/26
Pre-race routine:

Stopped drinking three hours before. Had banana and granola bar about 5:30am. Gel pack an hour before. Thought I lost my timing chip so got another. It was cleverly in my bike shoes so I couldn't possibly lose it.
Event warmup:

Go for a spin on the bike after desperately adjusting brakes. I had borrowed race wheels that don't seem to play well with my brakes. I've never used race wheels before. Kris and I went for a jog on the path and noticed a lot of roots. Said hi to Christian with TC Multisport. Swam a little. Decided to use wetsuit as they were allowed and I had decided to go all out for speed on this race.
Swim
  • 13m 37s
  • 809 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

A couple of dolphin dives and then there's a quick drop off. People go very different speeds, so I did run into some other swimmers. Lost some time trying to get back to the narrow exit chute.
What would you do differently?:

Stay closer to the buoys to save effort aiming for the chute.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

This went well. I just went to the TCMC clinic on transitions on Tuesday so that was fresh in my mind. I still got a little stuck getting the wetsuit off my legs. Mounting the bike on an incline is a challenge, but it went ok.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting the wetsuit off.
Bike
  • 43m 27s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Went hard the whole time. Never laid eyes on another wave 5 racer the whole race after the swim start. Passed lots of people and got passed by fast bikers from waves 6 and 7.
What would you do differently?:

Not drop bottle and run it over. That was scary.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

My bike got stuck on my wetsuit so that slowed me down a little.
What would you do differently?:

practice transitions more.
Run
  • 22m 53s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Had serious doubts about running after going full blast on the bike. Struggled running out of transition. Stopped at the aid station to drink both times. Tripped on a root in the last mile. Got vertical before I did a face plant. I forgot my garmin so I was pretty much not pacing. Just running hard.
What would you do differently?:

Do more than 20 minutes of trail running if I'm going to race a triathlon with a trail run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around the final stretch waiting for my wife. Lots of water and cool aid.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of trail running and need more experience on the bike.

Event comments:

This is my first time placing in an individual athletic event! What's even more cool is my wife placed second in her division too. Of course I stayed a long time, but left after the awards as our family was expecting us and they drew my number for the garmin. Argh. Stay 'til the end!
