Total Time = 8h 45m 38s
Overall Rank = 898/905
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 104/104
Pre-race routine:

Awake at 5am in a lovely beach house. Eggs, banana, oj.
Event warmup:

Walk around slowly. That's my ritual every day.
Swim
  • 39m 26s
  • 2078 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

How can a fat guy in that much neoprene, in salt water, still be so non-buoyant as to swim this current assisted course so poorly?
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim. But since two years of lame attempts have failed, what makes me think the next will be any different?
Transition 1
  • 08m 43s
Comments:

I stopped to use the port a potty. Amateur hour.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know, stop lolly gagging and remember it's a "race"?
Bike
  • 4h 02m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 13.86 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt better than Eagleman, but I think my legs outlasted my comfort in the saddle. I stopped at every aid station getting out of the saddle for a few minutes each time, just trying to survive.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more in training. A lot more. Like a real triathlete would.
Transition 2
  • 06m 36s
Comments:

Going inside was nice, having chairs to sit in to change shoes, and a real bathroom. I didn't think I was doing great, but I knew I could drag the run out of myself. I reminded myself I had 100 miles in 30 days in the lead up, and I could grind it out.
What would you do differently?:

Fly through transition like a pro, and slam down my bag like a mike drop.
Run
  • 3h 48m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 17m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a great time. A slow, tedious great time. This is a good course for extroverts.
What would you do differently?:

Weigh less, run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk to the convention center with my family to get my gear.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Seriously, stop asking me that cursed question.

Event comments:

My much more positive race report is on my blog at http://doughboytoironman.wordpress.comwith pictures. I think the important parts of the day were well covered: safety, course, hydration. But running out of finishers medals was a real let down for this total back of pack guy. Thanks to Daryn (qrkid) for the loaner.

Swimming
00:39:26 | 2078 yards | 01m 54s / 100yards
Age Group: 104/104
Overall: 892/905
Performance: Bad
Suit: Neosport xxxl
Course: Easiest swim in triathlon. Maybe NYC tri isfaster, but it's in the Hudson. This was a tide assisted swim down a narrow channel with one turn. At the pre-race meeting, the RD joked with the full distance athletes that he would drop a cheetos bag in the water, and if you didn't beat it to the finish, you couldn't race next year. I may not have beaten the cheetos bag. My swim is still just awful. It's like I am not even trying.
