Swim
Comments: I forgot about my technique and didn't focus properly because of the race conditions. What would you do differently?: Get a better mental focus during the actual swim and push myself a bit harder. I am still very nervous about wiping myself out on any one stage particularly this one for some reason so I don't push real hard -- I tend to pace myself. Transition 1
Comments: I did ok on this but I did get hung up on one bike shoe -- the insert bunched up in the toe and I had to take it off, straighten it out and try again. Other than that the bike transition went ok What would you do differently?: Run a bit faster to my bike from the pool. Maybe get some new shoes. Bike
Comments: Compared to other riders I did ok on the bike. I think only 3 or 4 people at the most passed me and just by a bit. I passed several people on the climb. What would you do differently?: I need to be bit stronger on the bike. It wasn't horrible but it was tough. Transition 2
Comments: I need a better set of laces. They are too long and after using the quick draw pull on them there was about 10 inches of lace left over. I stuffed that into my shoe which happily does not seem to bother me. What would you do differently?: New laces for racing Run
Comments: I started out pretty slow but picked up in the middle. On the return down hill I passed quite a few people. I didn't feel real strong and didn't have much power but I wasn't real weak either. What would you do differently?: I want to run with more explosive power. I am just on the edge of getting that but not quite there. Next year I hope to have that. Post race
Warm down: I drank a bottle of water someone handed me at the end. I then at a banana and some grapes. I didn't get bloated and I felt pretty good although very exhausted. Later I wandered up to the area where they were posting the preliminary results and I got another banana and a bagel with lots of peanut butter smeared on it. Somehow I stomached all that food with no problem. Event comments: This is a very interesting and challenging race --its not flat at all and so its really kind of hard to pace yourself. Woke up at 4AM -- drank 1 bottle of water and then made a small cup of oatmeal with 1/2 banana in it. Followed that up with 1 hardboiled egg. Left house at 4:30AM and headed over to Ken's house to pick him up. We were finally on the road at 4:45AM. Arrived at Socorro race location at about 6:05 AM.
Overall body warm-up --- Plank, about 10 squats, front back shoulder rolls, some light stretching. About 7:25AM I got into the pool and swam 100m.
