Pre-race routine:

First Tri!!!!

Woke up at 3:55 am. Started with water, then a Muscle Milk and a bowl of Ezekiel cereal, 10 minutes of easy stretching, applied sunscreen, packed car, cup of coffee to go and was out the door by the 4:55 am.

Comments:

My sighting sucked. I was constantly pulling right despite having the buoys on my breathing side the whole swim. I swam at a pace that I wasn't accustomed to during my training. It must have been race day adrenaline. Overall I'm happy to have my first swim out of the way. They did a pretty relaxed start for the f&f category. I'm assuming we were all novices. Thy started you one after another in a single file line. No group wave start.

What would you do differently?:

Sight more often and accurately.

My T1 was a disaster. This was my first Tri, so besides veering off course, T1 proved to be a very humbling experience. I opted to swim without a tri top and put it on in T1. Big mistake! My body was wet from the swim and I had a hell of a time trying to pull my tight top on over my wet sticky body. It took 2 attempts! Because I was not wearing bike shoes for this race I had to sit down and put socks and shoes on in T1 also. My feet had sand all over them from the swim run. My T1 time frustrated me greatly especially when I saw all of my splits from the race.

What would you do differently?:

Wear tri top for swim! Possible tub of water for foot cleaning, Bike shoes attached to bike?

Comments:

I felt strong and fast on the bike. I passed everyone and was only passed twice on the ride, but after looking at the overall results I have work to do. I knew this would be my strongest part of the race.

What would you do differently?:

Work on my pacing so that I progressively get faster as the race goes on. I went balls out from the start and I think my time suffered a bit at the end. Start riding with bike shoes and a proper biking helmet. Be mindful of my aerodynamics.

Comments:

This transition felt much better because I had my running shoes on already. Another mistake in transition cost me some time though. I stated to run out to the bike out area and realized that I didn't know where the run out was. After running around in circles a few times a volunteer pointed me in the right direction.

I felt pretty good for my running level. Overall I'm happy with this part of my race considering my running experience.

Event comments:

I had an amazing time! Completed my first triathlon! I learned so much from this experience and I'm psyched for my next tri in in Duluth in 3 weeks!

I WILL improve on my transitions in my next race!
