Pre-race routine:

Being my first triathlon, the nerves kept me from getting a good night's sleep so I opted to getting to the race site about 2 hours before the event coordinators arrived. Found a great parking spot about 800 meters from transition, so I had to bike with my gear to get everything set-up. After I set-up my gear I waited to be the first one to get marked! t-3 hours...
Event warmup:

I walked around the event trying to take it all in. I was surprisingly relaxed most of the morning. Everyone I spoke to was incredibly helpful and friendly. The vibe around this race was warm and upbeat. I had a chance to get into the 78 degree lake for a few minutes to "warm up" only to be asked to get out. So much for that.
Swim
  • 16m 50s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

Mine was the 7th wave to start about 35 minutes after the first wave. Even though I felt swimming to be my strongest discipline, I opted to stay towards the middle of the pack when we started. They called for the green caps, entered the pen, waited...and...we are off. jogged into the water and immediately found my rhythm. I was really surprised how relaxed I was in the water. I felt as if I had a consistent pace the entire course. I passed several people in my wave and a few from the 6th wave. My breathing was great. Had a few late collisions with other swimmers, but we seemed to respect each other's forward progress respectfully.
What would you do differently?:

I probably could have pushed harder on the swim, especially the last 200-400m. I think I nailed my sighting, although bilateral breathing remains a challenge. I need to trust my training and swim fitness more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

I was slightly winded getting out of the water so I didn't run that hard into transition. Put cap and goggles on my mat, put on my Garmin, headband, helmet and glasses. Had a few sips of "red sports drink", dried my feet off and put on the bike shoes. I definitely used T1 to get my HR back in check. (T1 rank : 315/609)
What would you do differently?:

Put a little more hustle getting into T1. Perhaps have a more absorbent towel for my feet.
Bike
  • 52m 6s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 15.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Having been in the last few waves meant that there were a ton of people on course by the time I got out there, but it was not a problem since there was so much space. The few downhills were fast and fun, but with every downhill comes a killer uphill. This was definitely my weakest discipline.
What would you do differently?:

Work on bike fitness!! Strength + Power
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

I had practiced putting my feet on my shoes prior to dismount. However, I think I took them out way to early this time around! Getting into T2 was smooth. Got my bike gear off and into my running shoes with ease.
What would you do differently?:

Be patient when approaching T2 and not take my feet out of the shoes too early. (T2 rank: 385/609)
Run
  • 25m 17s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Leaving T2, I was feeling "great". I felt as if I had a consistently strong pace throughout, but I think I killed my legs on the bike. Then those hills on the run! I am pretty sure I handled them appropriately and went up and over with ease. I found a few people to draft that had a nice pace. By the time we entered the last 800 meters or so, I was done. My pace dropped off considerable, but as I began to hear the crowd, I put the legs into high gear (although my running form suffered toward the end) all the way down the finish line! I also noticed that they don't have visible mileage markers on the course. Not sure if that is intentional.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to HR data.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and spent time with my family!

Event comments:

Great first triathlon. I am excited to see how much I improve after this race!!!

Course: The course was a challenge for me. Wide smooth shoulders which was well maintained. There were more than a few select hills in the way. Only two turn arounds. One at the 5km mark coming out of Camp Buckner and one at the 15km mark to head back to Camp Buckner.

Course: This course was very challenging as well. Almost no portion was flat. There was a steep hill which lasted almost 500 meters. (Good thing I have been doing periodic hill repeats!). The last loop takes you through transition and passed the finish line for another out and back! That was no fun at all.
