Swim
Comments: As my first triathlon, I over estimated my swim time and was in the back of the pack. They ask you to line up based on your race number, which correlates to your swim pace (the slower you are, the higher your number). It is a wave start - from what I could tell when I got up there they let 1 person go every 1 or 2 seconds. It wasn't overly organized, but it worked. It took me about 25 minutes to begin the swim from the time they started the race. Transition 1
Comments: Since I was in the back of the pack, the Transition area was pretty clear by time I got there. As my first triathlon I was slow with the dry off/bike gear on. For the bike exit they do not have clearly marked mount/dismount zones so I wasn't sure when I could get on/off my bike. What would you do differently?: Push myself through changes faster Bike
Comments: The bike course was a little boring, but there was good volunteer support directing you where to go (there are a couple turns). I took the bike easy to save my legs for the run. What would you do differently?: Warm up on bike before race. Push harder. Transition 2
Comments: I biked and ran in same shoes. Wasn't mentally prepared for T2 (run through each step in your mind - visualize!). This Transition could have been so much faster for me. What would you do differently?: Faster. Throw helmet, rack bike and GO! Run
Comments: Going light on the bike saved my legs to push through the run. I do run/walk intervals and I was able to keep my intended pace. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Small area at finish, but they had water, Gatorade, burgers, hot dogs, chips and fruit for participants. I stretched on the curbs. Event comments: Overall it IS a great first timer event IF you have done research about Triathlon/spectated at one beforehand and don't need a lot of direction or signage before or during the race. There is was NO signage for bike/run exit during the race or body marking/troubleshooting information before the race. What makes this a great beginner race is the fast and flat course, and all race courses being compact in a single area. It is also easy for spectators to follow your progress. There WERE lots of volunteers on the course - just not before to answer questions/give directions. No drink stations except on run - but there were plenty out there on that part. Came from out of town and stayed at Best Western River City. It was was an ok place to stay for 1 night, but nothing fancy.
Got to race site around 5:40 am - went to get packet - no line. Next, set up my transition area, which is first-come, first-served at this race. But the area is really small so it really wouldn't matter where you get set up. One thing to note is there is there was hardly any staff/volunteer support in the transition area to answer questions, direct participants, etc. After setting up, went over to the body marking area across the street from the transition area. There was no signage, we just followed the crowds.
Hit the beach around around 6:15 - they still had not set out the buoys, but they were working on it. Around 6:30 they let people get in the water to warm-up. The race started late, but I'm not sure how late as I didn't have a watch on.
