Swim
Comments: Somehow my chip must not have registered over the pad after the swim because I don't have an official swim or T1 time, but the rest seemed to work fine. So I guessed on my swim and T1 time. The waves were ridiculous. It was like climbing mountains during the swim. I waded in to my knees and had waves crashing up to my shoulders. Once I saw the waves every goal time went out the window and I just wanted to make it through. The out portion of the course was the hardest, but it was hard to keep track of where I was throughout because we were getting thrown around so much. I ended up way out to the left of the buoys coming back in and just ended up swimming to shore and then running along the beach a little ways to get back to the swim exit since I figured that would be easier than swimming back that far. All in all I'm not too disappointed in the swim. It was very hard and probably made the rest of my race suffer a bit, but all things considered I'm pretty happy with it. What would you do differently?: Not swallow so much salt water. Ick. Transition 1
Comments: Probably should have taken my time to recover more from the difficult swim, but I just motored through and got on to the bike. What would you do differently?: Breathe and take my time a bit more. Bike
Comments: I was hurting at the start of the bike from having worked harder than expected on the swim. I'm not sure I ever really recovered from drinking so much salt water either, and wished I had planned on having water on the bike instead of Gatorade as a result, but oh well. Overall it wasn't bad. Passed a bunch of kids and relays (10-24 year olds and relays started with the elites). Got passed by one of the guys in the wave behind me, but kept him within my sites for the rest of the race. It was nice having someone 10+ lengths ahead of me going about the same speed to keep my eyes on and motivate me to keep going. I feel like I could have done better on the bike if I had taken my time a bit more in T1, but overall I was happy with the bike. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Again, probably should have taken my time a bit more. I was breathing pretty hard starting the run. Run
Comments: I asked for water running out of T2 and was handed Gatorade. I hadn't been planning on drinking it but pouring it over my head. I don't deal well with the heat, I think I really needed to pour water over my head. I probably should have asked again for water at the second guy to see if they had any, but I just chucked it and went on. The first mile and a half were really tough. I was breathing hard and overheating, despite running pretty slowly. After pouring water over my head at the first (and only) aid station I felt a bit better and sped up a bit, but I just never really felt totally with it. I think I probably hadn't really recovered from the olympic distance race I did 2 weeks before, so my run suffered. It wasn't bad, just harder than it should have been for how slow I was running. What would you do differently?: Try harder to get water coming out of T1 to pour over my head, run faster despite not feeling great because I wasn't sore after the race and I usually am, so clearly I didn't push hard enough. Post race
Warm down: Waited to watch my fiance, finish (he ended up beating me by 3 seconds... can't say we don't make good training partners finishing that close together!), got some food/drink, watched my Dad (who was doing his first triathlon at 71!) bike in and run out and cheered him on, tried to catch My Mom on her bike in/run out (doing her first triathlon at 62!) but somehow missed her. Had a bit more food/water and waited to watch my parents finish. So proud of them for finishing their first triathlon! They both had a great time and overall it was a fun day. What limited your ability to perform faster: Doing the race just 2 weeks after an olympic distance race, the mountains we had to swim over in the swim, and overheating on the run. Event comments: I could have used another aid station on the run. I didn't drink any water, but I could have used some water to splash over my face to cool off. Last updated: 2012-07-23 12:00 AM

Up an hour before we wanted to leave, finished packing up the car, sunscreen on, oatmeal squares and Gatorade for breakfast.
Looking at the waves with horror...
