Swim
Comments: Lots of firsts on this day, first triathlon, first time swimming in a wetsuit, first time swimming any significant distance in a lake, first tim swimming in a pack. I didn't push very hard on the swim at all, and it shows. Ended up going slightly off course before the first buoy, that costed me at least a minute or so. What would you do differently?: Sight better, far more swim practice and push the pace a lot harder. Transition 1
Comments: Getting the suit off took a bit longer than I had anticipated, that coupled with putting on socks probably ate up quite a bit of time. What would you do differently?: Skip the socks maybe? Bike
Comments: Started off the ride pretty well, got to the gravely section of the road we were warned about, slowed down but evidently not enough to avoid flatting on the hidden lip of pavement at the end of the gravel. Pulled off to the shoulder and got to work changing the flat while doing my best to kill a horse fly that would not quit. I lost about 9~ minutes in the process but got back on the road and back up to speed. What would you do differently?: -In hindsight, slowed down to about 5 mph to go through that section (which is what I did when I encountered that rough patch again after the turn around) - Carried a fly swatter Transition 2
Comments: Typical transition, with the addition of putting on bug spray before leaving transition. Run
Comments: I used to think that mosquitos were the most annoying creatures on earth, then Duluth introduced me to horse flies, they were definitely out in numbers. Started off slow and upped the pace as the course progressed, I was a bit dehydrated by the time I got to the middle of the run but still managed to keep the pace higher than at the beginning. What would you do differently?: Sprayed the top of my head with bug spray or packed a cap instead of a visor. Post race
Warm down: Had a beer, and a few slices of melon. What limited your ability to perform faster: Flatting on the bike course and the heat on the run. Event comments: I loved everything about this race except for the broken pavement on the bike course. The event was well organized, the venue was gorgeous, the commemorative pint glasses were also an awesome touch. Lots of food, drink, and entertainment afterwards. Definitely planning to add it to the calendar for next year, hopefully the roads will be in better condition by then. Last updated: 2012-07-23 12:00 AM

Had bread with nutella, a slice of zucchini bread, and a bottle of starbucks frappuccino, then packed up camp.
Swam for about 5 minutes, and waded around in the water for another 5.
