Pre-race routine:

Got down to the festival grounds about an hour before the start of the race. After checking in and checking out the classic Volkswagen collection, I found a place in the shade to do some stretching which I sorely needed (key word being "sorely").

I didn't taper or interrupt my training at all for this reason, so I had no reason to expect a really good race. Still, this race takes place on a nice, flat course and the weather was cooperatively cool, so I thought I had an outside chance at a PR. I actually set my 5K PR (21:30) at this race a few years ago, so I'd be lying to say I wasn't going to try. But even though I'm running more these days, I'm probably 5 pounds heavier and just don't seem to have the "killer instinct" I had back then. I don't know if it's just age or what, but I seem to be having trouble pushing myself to the absolute max lately. That's probably what would cost me me first podium finish here.

I dunno. I feel like I pushed myself pretty hard, to the point of feeling like I could blow up, but I think in the past I've been able to find and hold a higher gear. I don't know if I'm just on the downslope now that I'm 43 or if this is just a temporary thing due to mostly running LSD, motivational issues, or what.

I started towards the front of the pack and really didn't get hung up anywhere, which is something of a feat in these types of runs. I though I had a decent first mile, reserving plenty in the tank, but by about the halfway point I was really struggling to hold on. Still, I was passing runners at this point and not getting passed (maybe I was passed by one runner), so I was clearly holding up better than most. Conditions were really pretty ideal, with plenty of shade and a light cool breeze, so I can't blame it on that. I dunno, I just think like I could have "sold out" a little more-- same way I felt at the St. Dom's 5K a couple weeks ago. I just don't seem to be able to swallow the pain like I used to.
What would you do differently?:

I probably would have gone into my kick a little earlier (say, with about .5 left to go instead of .25). I can't help but think that I could have made up the :09 that denied me my first podium finish in a race ever. Still, I guess I can't be too upset. I didn't taper for this and I've been training hard. I just don't know.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just lack of "killer instinct" and probably the fact that I did not rest or taper at all for this race. I probably could also drop 5 pounds. I've read that each pound of body fat costs about :02/mile at the same effort. So if I could drop even 5 pounds, I'd pick up :30 in this race and get close to my PR. I'm sure that's part of my problem.


Event comments:

I really love this race. It's big enough to feel like a festival race but small enough where I feel competitive. It has a great community feel and you can't beat the free admission to GermanFest and free beer ticket they throw in for racers. Nice raffle, too. My only gripe is that the race is not chip-timed, and those few seconds it takes to get to the start line matter.

Of course, the best thing about this race is that when you cross the finish line, they don't just hand you a cold bottle of water. They hand you two sausages. Spicy ones, too. And really, how can you top a good spicy sausage (or two) after a hard all-out sprint?
