Pre-race routine:

Race was close by (woo hoo!!), so no 4 am wake up call. Was able to get to Mercer County Park in no time (easy parking, not big traffic) and into transition. Actually drank a Wawa coffee for pre-race breakfast :)
Event warmup:

Little stretching. I'm not a big fan of a pre-swim swim (although I probably should work this into my routine somehow)!
Swim
  • 16h 04m
  • 547 yards
  • 2h 56m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Terrible, terrible swim for me. I started very close to the inside buoys, which ended up being a mistake since everyone in my wave had the same idea. Ended up in "swim traffic" the entire swim and couldn't ever establish a good rhythm or pace. Didn't track well at all, and kept popping up to see where I was going. Was happy when I got out of the water for sure!
What would you do differently?:

More distance/endurance swim training. Stay clear of "swim traffic" even if I start a little further out off the buoy. Practice more tracking when swimming. Get faster in the water!! *sigh*
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

uneventful T1, a bit long of an uphill out of the water into T1, but after my swim was just happy to be in transition
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 38h 57m
  • 11.5 miles
  • 0.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Totally my own clumsiness - but dropped my one and only water bottle about 1/4 mile into the bike leg. And then ran it over with my rear tire. Was a little worried that running over the bottle may screw up my tire or chain - but ended up okay.

It was a really long 11 miles without water however - especially after a brown lake swim!

Good bike time, felt good on the ride and made up a little time from my miserable swim.

What would you do differently?:

More water bottles, less butter fingers! Would probably go out a bit harder on the bike, but was a bit hesitant that I may need to keep some energy for any hills or the back half of the course. I probably could have taken the first half faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Uneventful T2
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really - maybe take a little more water in?
Run
  • 27h 59m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 8h 59m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty decent run for me. Good course, and felt pretty good at the half way turn around mark. Good volunteers and a good run course for spectators (can really watch the runners go by if you want to).

Finish was good and well managed.
What would you do differently?:

Might go out a bit harder on the first 1.5 miles
Post race
Warm down:

Did I mention there was a beer garden?

Oh, and a water spray tent - both great, great post race items :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My own swim abilities, and a bit of hesitation that I would go out too fast at the start of the bike and run, so held back a bit.

Event comments:

CGI Racing puts on a fantastic race! It was seriously perfect weather, and well marked course.

Great event and would highly recommend for any first timers as well as long timers as an awesome tri! Will be back again next year for sure!

Course: Great "V" swim course. Lots of buoys and kayaks. Lake swim, and the lake was a little "brown" but I've seen worse. There were some park ranger motor boats and unfortunately you could smell the motor gas in the water while swimming by. Small little beach, and not too gooey lake walk-in area.

Course: Great, great bike course! One big loop with quite a few straightaways where you could pick up pace and speed. (I'm not a fan of multiple loops at all!) All right hand turns, minimal small hills. Through some neighborhoods and even farm fields (and yes, we were in New Jersey). Not closed to traffic, but cars were keep well regulated and the course was well marked so cars were not a problem. Did I say great course?

Course: Out and back run on mostly paved path. Not really hilly, just tiny incline on the way back to finish. Lots of water, Heed, towels on the course - esp for a 5k! Good run course and since it was an out and back you could see runners in front and behind on their way back and forth
