Swim
Comments: I started out to the right. When I swim, I tend to vere right and breathe right. With the buoys on my left, I had a hard time staying tight and on line. I probably added a few hundred yards to the swim. I did stay away from alot of the body contact in the first few hundred yards. What would you do differently?: Try to keep a better line. My swimming is much improved and I should have been able to stay with the faster swimmers in my group. Transition 1
Comments: When the wetsuit strippers pulled my suit off, I got a bad cramp in my right hamstring. I took it very easy getting to the bike and put on several layers to stay warm. I obviously was not interested in maximizing time in transition. This was about finishing in a reasonable time. What would you do differently?: I don't take back anything. I probably could have scaled back some of my riding gear to make transition faster. Bike
Comments: My goal was to conserve energy on the ride. I could have ridden much faster but I was concerned with the run. It was a good plan as I felt really good on the run. What would you do differently?: I could have pushed the pace a little more. I had no idea how my body would respond so this was a learning experience. I now have a basis to work from. Transition 2
Comments: Due to the amount of clothing I had on for the ride, it was a little difficult to get ready for the run quickly. Once again, I wasn't really concerned with transition times. This was about finishing and learning. What would you do differently?: Nothing much actually. Run
Comments: I was able to conserve energy and had a good run. I took the first lap in a conservative manner. Second lap went very good. Third lap was tough. The last two miles were very rough but I made it through without stopping. What would you do differently?: Have my Shark Salt with me and take in more Gatorade to replace electrolytes. I had some cramping but nothing bad. Post race
Warm down: Not much. When I stopped, I was ready to stop. What limited your ability to perform faster: My conservative plan. Event comments: Had a great time. I don't know why they want to take advantage of you at the ironman store. The stuff is really expensive and they know you want it. It was very cold. Woke up and tried to eat some Clif bars. Was very nervous since this was my first HIM. It was so cold waiting around, I jumped into a box truck to get out of the wind. Put my wetsuit on in there and waited for my wave to start at 7:45.
Not really much to speak of.
