Swim
Comments: Went out strong and kind of got into a weird open space very early. It was a men's and women's 30-39 age group start. Lots of weak swimmers behind me, and strong swimmers in front. After the first turn, I found myself generally a little less comfortable with my breathing than the HIM. But, I managed to end up less than 2 mins per 100 yds, which was a first! What would you do differently?: I probably went out a little too strong, which effect my breathing the rest of the way. But I think the hardest thing is that I had very few pacing buddies around. Lots of passers from the younger wave and Masters that went out after me. Transition 1
Comments: It was a long transition, but about average for my age group. It was a long push for the bike before mounting, and kept a steady jogging pace through that. I was a little slow out of the water to the transition area in order to get my heart rate down. What would you do differently?: I probably should start swimming with my race suit or singlet on instead of putting it on in transition. I still feel good about jogging my bike with my shoes on instead of having them latched and running barefoot. Maybe something to practice down the road. Bike
Comments: Good pace. My goal was over 20 mph, so that was accomplished! I had 2 gels, 20 oz of gatorade and 16 oz of water. Plenty of fluid and nutrition, which set me up for a great run! I worked on getting 10 seconds of draft from those who passed me before dropping out of the zone. Got some nasty looks from a few, but I know I kept it legal. What would you do differently?: Nothing for now. Transition 2
Comments: This was definitely my area to improve. I was 2nd to last in my age group for this transition. I sat down to put my socks on due to lots of grass on my feet. I forgot to put my laces in my tongue-holder loop, which cost me valuable seconds! However, taking the extra time did get my heart-rate down, which set me up to really take off on the run. What would you do differently?: Need to figure out how to do socks and shoes quicker! Run
Comments: I was really pleased with my run. I started off with a 7 flat mile, which I was really shooting for an 8 until I could figure out what would work. I felt good after that first, so just kept going. The last two miles I averaged 6:45 min/mi. I walked through 2 of the 3 aid stations to take on plenty of fluids, and downed a gel right before the 2nd one. What would you do differently?: Nothing, that was as good of a run as I could've imagined! Post race
Warm down: Walked for about 5 minutes, went to the transition area and stretched thoroughly. What limited your ability to perform faster: I definitely still have room to improve on my swim. Also, having trained for the HIM, I put much less emphasis on speed training. So the lack of knowledge on what I could maintain probably put me behind a bit. Event comments: Great time. Only three weeks removed from my HIM had me nervous about how I'd perform, especially not having worked out too regularly. I was very happy about it, and would gladly go back to this race! Got there at 6:30 am for an 8:30 am start. Very early, but glad I did, because I had to pick up my packet and ended up making several trips back and forth between race area and the car. Got to the transition area about 7am, got my stuff set out, sunscreen on (although it wasn't needed!), and then went and had a look at the swim course. Did a little light jogging back to transition and counted off my bike rack from the ends. Did a little stretching, then into the wet suit and back down to the beach to watch the sprint waves take off.
Besides the light jogging, I was able to get a little water time during the sprint starts very near the beach. Not as much as I would've liked, but still got the heart rate up a bit. Then stretched arms and legs for about 5 minutes on the beach before start time!
