Swim
Comments: This swim was pretty good. I felt afterward I could have gone a bit harder. I don't know why I didn't. I think a two loop course scares me for some reason. I know it's the same length, but just doing laps in an endurance race is never a good thing in my mind I guess. I was able to draft a few times, but I was tracking really well, so I dropped the feet in front of me as they veered away. It was good practice, but I didn't need it. What would you do differently?: I should have pushed harder at the beginning then the final 1/3 of the race. I was pacing well in the middle, feeling in control. But I held off blowing my load in the final third of the race for some reason. It ended up paying off on the bike seemingly. So maybe it was a good strategy. Had I gone out faster, I could have avoided some congestion before the first turn. Nothing bad, but I had to reroute a bit. Transition 1
Comments: I put my shoes on before I get on the bike. I haven't practice strapping in, and I have a fear of getting gravel on my feet and in my shoes. I don't want to deal with that while I'm riding. What would you do differently?: Not much. Went pretty smooth. Maybe push a little harder running out of the water. I'm nervous about slipping on the sand and wet grass, still coming back from ACL surgery from January. Bike
Comments: Ride was awesome. I wasn't sure how quick I could push it, but was comfortable. Went through the first loop hanging on to a group of two guys that caught me. We got to the sprint/Oly split and they went straight so they were doing the sprint. I was happy I pushed to stay with them. I had about 10min solo, passing a few people on the beginning of the second loop. Then a quick group of 3 came up on me, and we battled it out in the second loop. I was killing the descending portions, and they fought back to catch me on the ascensions. Final 2 miles I tried to bury them. One hung with me and we headed into transition together. There was a lot of maneuvering around the sprint racers as well as the slow Oly racers we caught. I was really confident in my cornering. Almost never coming out of aero, except for the 90 degree turns. Some good corners to overtake people who were unsure of their abilities. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a little harder a little earlier. Transition 2
Comments: Got through here quick. One of the quicker of the day. Was about 10 seconds behind one guy I came in with. He was one rack over and I was in and out before he had his first shoe tied. What would you do differently?: Spot rack better. Brother's bike was already racked, so I looked for his bike and that helped me get in and out quick. Plus we were near the end. Run
Comments: Went out expecting a 7:30 pace and would have been happy. I haven't been pushing myself running, but running consistently. Seems to have paid off. I hit the first mile in 6:52 or so, and knew I could hold. My knee was feeling good and I wasn't feeling overtaxed from the bike. Did everything I did to keep my cadence quick and light. When I was hitting it right, my time dropped into the 6:30's and 40's. But I struggled here and there to maintain. Started to feel a blister due to wet socks that didn't dry fully from the bike, but that was around mile 4, so I knew I could stick it out. Hit the last mile pretty hard, coming in the last 400m and really killing it. What would you do differently?: Go harder sooner. I need to learn where I can kick. Last mile or so could have been closer to 6min/mi pace had I really cranked it. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, found my brother and got food. Laid down near lake and let the race sink in. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of confidence in my knee for running. Not pushing it as hard as I could on the swim or bike. Not totally sure of myself for going all-out at the Oly distance quite yet, but getting there. Event comments: Good small local race. No water aid on the bike. Fine for me, but for other newbs at the Oly distance, probably not the best idea. Lots of good volunteers and a great atmosphere. Can't get the site to load, but I was 17th overall, and 3rd in my division. Will update my rankings for each section later. Last updated: 2012-07-31 12:00 AM

Got up early, 4:15 and ate breakfast at home. Loaded up the bike and gear into the car and hit the road for the hour drive over to the race. Had a couple waffles, chocolate milk, yogurt, coffee, and water. Had a couple more bars throughout the morning leading up to the race.
Headed down to swim warmup about 20min before the race started and got in a couple hundred meters and some stretching and loosening up. Water was warm, but I wore my wetsuit since it was allowed (not USAT sanctioned)
